Henderson, Texas was founded in 1836 by James Henderson and his wife, Catharine. Henderson had come to the Lone Star State in search of a new home for his family. He found the area that is now Henderson on the Brazos River and started to homestead the land. By 1839, he had built a cabin and opened up a store. In 1840, he married Sarah Barnes and together they started to raise their families. The Hendersons were one of the first families to permanently settle in Henderson when it was offered as a Rancho Seco Mexican Land Grant in 1845. When it was ceded back to Mexico in 1848, they sold their holdings and moved back east where they eventually settled near Cincinnati, Ohio. They died there in 1865 and are buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
