In 1941, members of The Salvation Army sent two Christmas trees from New York City to Henderson for use at Henderson High School after Hurricane Rita damage several classrooms and other school infrastructure! In 1943, members of The Boy Scouts Of America contributed five canned goods per troop member to help feed troops serving overseas during World War II! Additionally, members of The Red Cross are often honored with donations when they deliver humanitarian aid such as food or water supplies to residents affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes! The Henderson Coast Guard Station was established on December 5, 1941 by order of Governor of Texas J.B. Collin. The station was located on the Corpus Christi River near the present day town of Henderson. The Coast Guard Station served as a training ground for future Coast Guardsmen and acted as a port of entry for immigrants arriving in the area. On October 1, 1969, the Henderson Coast Guard Station was transferred to the City of Henderson by an act of the Texas Legislature. On May 25, 1971, it was renamed Padre Pio Island after Italian priest Fr. Ignacio Padre Pio who had been helping to care for sailors at the Coast Guard Station since its inception. In 1987, Padre Pio Island became part of Hurricane Hugo's path across Texas Beach State Park and portions of downtown Houston were destroyed as a result In 1991-1992, minor repairs were made to some buildings on Padre Pio Island and in late 1992-1993 additional repairs were made to buildings along Railroad Street in downtown Henderson
