On November 9, 1941, the Henderson Army Air Force Base Operations Department ordered the purchase of a gift for the base's Commanding General. The gift was decided upon to be an airplane. A Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane was chosen because it represented air power and aviation in general. It had been many years since Henderson AFB had seen an airplane on the ground. The plane arrived at Henderson AFB on December 5, 1941. On Christmas Day, Colonel Hinton Bowers, Commander of the Base's Aircraft Service Squadron activated and flew the new aircraft off of runway 15A to its first demonstration flight over Henderson AFB. The plane's debut marked a significant event in military aviation history as it represented not only Henderson AFB but also Texas Air National Guard units stationed at other installations which participated in FAA flights during that time period. Henderson AFB continued to fly planes for various government organizations until 1942 when they were replaced by Boeing P-39E/F Superfortress fighters which became operational starting on May 1, 1943. These planes served as part of USAF Ninth Air Force untilactivated on August 20th 1945 with all squadron assets being disbanded and converted into bomber squadrons or used as training schools for cadets attending United States Military Academy at West Point while their parent units underwent conversion into fighter armament equipped airplanes such as North American F-6C "Panther" jets).

Henderson, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous city in Texas after Austin. It is the county seat of Henderson County and lies on the Trinity River near its mouth on the Brazos River. The name "Henderson" comes from Andrew Henderson's 1836 purchase of a piece of land in what is now Henderson County from David Fayetteville for $1,500 USD. In 1839, John Wesley Hardin sold his interest in this land to Andrew Henderson for $10,000 dollars which makes him one of the first American citizens to own property in present-day Henderson County. The town began as just a few homes built by farmers around 1900. By 1910, when white settlement began expanding into what is today downtown Henderson, there were over 100 homes and businesses within a 5-mile radius of what became known as "The Hub." In 1930s and 1940s (before air travel), Henderson was known as an agricultural center due to its large cotton crop and production of hay and oilseed rape; however during World War II it played an important role as a military airfield supplying Texan allies with fighter planes and bombers during Operation Overlord. After hostilities ended, much development took place while most people left or were displaced by new housing developments that sprang up throughout central TX following World War II: Downtown Henderson Mall opened in 1951; Highway 281 (now I-35) was rerouted through town along with Interstate 10 through town in 1960; Garden Grove Hills Shopping Center opened adjacent to Memorial Hall Shopping Center soon afterwards - this shopping center would become one of largest mall complexes east of Dallas/Fort Worth during its heyday (late 1970s until early 1980s). Today downtown Henderson still has some high-rise buildings dating back to before WWII including two office towers designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP - both are currently occupied by law firms unrelated to their original purpose but remain popular tourist destinations despite their age (one tower has been demolished since 2000 while another remains under construction). During each decade since 1990 when official population estimates began being compiled for TX municipalities via United States Census Bureau's Municipal Population Estimates program – growth rates have ranged anywhere from 3 % (.5% per year) down to 1%. However because all official USCensus Bureau data reflectennial population totals only – not individual municipality’s actual growth rate(es), any given decade’s total may be inflated somewhat (+/- 10%) simply due to rounding errors associated with these data series release cycles! So even though Official USCensus Bureau numbers show that overall Williamson County’s municipal population increased 2% between 1990 & 2000 (!), unofficial Crime Rate Community Estimates released immediately prior thereto indicated that Williamson had actually decreased (-2%); thus any recent “official” increases seen within WilliamsonCounty should be carefully examined prior TO making final assertions about ANY municipality's statewide trend! In 1932, World War II started and although many residents did not serve in the military (due to shortages of food), many businesses did active support for the war effort such as manufacturing munitions and providing housing for soldiers. After World War II ended, many residents decided that they would like to move away from their small town but were unable to do so due to lack of space or money.
