The Harlingen National Guard was organized on November 15, 1915. The Guards were first named the “Harlingen Volunteer Infantry Regiment” and then the “Texas Rangers” in 1916. On October 7, 1917, the regiment was redesignated as the Texas Army National Guard and re-organized on December 1, 1917. The organization of the guard changed again on February 26, 1920 when it became a state militia unit under the command of Major General Sidney S. Thomas. The battalion became a regiment on May 6, 1920 and was redesignated as an artillery battalion on October 1st that year. In 1928 it reverted to its original name of the Texas Army National Guard when it was re-designated as such by Governor John Connally. On January 8th 1938, Headquarters Company was activated at Austin with Companies A & B being detached to Brownsville for duty in World War II while Headquarters Company remained at Harlingen where it served until 1945 when it returned to Austin and relieved Companies A & B from service with orders to report to Fort Worth for shipment overseas. After their return home they were attached to Headquarters Battery which formed part of Task Force 64th Artillery Brigade which landed in Normandy during Operation Overlord On July 14th 1951 Officer candidate school began at Ft Sam Houston State University preparing officers for assignment within the guard units stationed throughout Texas On August 15 Battalion Commander Majors James Worthy notified all companies present at Ft Bliss that due to budgetary cuts troop strength had been reduced from fifty five officers per company down to forty two Officers only All remaining officers were reassigned into other commands or discharged . On September 15 Cadets from Squadron 22nd FS patrolled San Antonio airfield looking for trespassers after a group of Air Force recruits suddenly left their barracks without permission

Some commanders within the military believed that because so many veteran soldiers had returned home following European hostilities it would be easier for them now than ever before for them to integrate back into society once again; however this did not happen immediately and there were several incidents where members of the military committed dereliction of duty or tried join forces with Axis forces instead of assisting Allies when ordered to do so. It took until 1945 before most servicemen had fully recovered from World War II and could reintegrate into societyonce again - something which can only be said about a small percentage considering how much work still needed to be done physically and emotionally post-war period! Reconstruction Era Times After America entered World War II federal lawmakers looked towards methods other than simply calling up volunteers for active duty as an answer to potential manpower shortages sustained by war efforts abroad. Harlingen is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–Bexar metropolitan area. The first settler in Harlingen vicinity was James A. Robertson who arrived in 1845 and founded a trading post on the Guadalupe River. In 1846, John Dickey settled here and built his sawmill on what is now US 71 near present-day Harlingen High School. By 1870, there were over 20 businesses operating in Harlingen with 1,500 residents and $5 million worth of trade goods passing through its doors each year. In 1886, oil wells were drilled in the area by J P Morgan & Co., which led to an increased demand for goods produced in this region such as cotton and livestock products. This boom period also brought new people to Harlingen including many entrepreneurs who started small businesses or opened stores downtown - such as William Baughman (1886-1940), one of the early businessmen of San Antonio; Harry Latham (1887-1959), owner of Latham's Drug Store; Claude Ruggles (1888-1975); George Winker (1900-1976) president of First National Bank; Harry Ehrlich (1902-1983) general manager of Alamo Heights Independent School District No 5; Lamar Sitton (1904-) city councillor for City Council District 8b; Jack Fenton (1906-) mayor of San Antonio; and Julius Rosenberg (1920-) cofounder and CEO of Rosenberg Oil Company
The Harlingen community was founded in 1871 by Captain John A. Robertson and his wife, Eliza. The first post office in the community was established in 1872. In 1879, the Robertson family moved to their current home on North Loop Street. They continued to live there until 1915 when they sold the house and moved to their present location on East Houston Street. The Robertson family operated a grocery store from 1918-1974 before moving its business indoors to what is now known as Park Plaza Shopping Center. The Robertsons donated land for the current shopping center which opened in 1974.
