Since the late 1800s, Harlingen has been a center for maritime gifts. Merchants and sailors from all over the world bring their favorite items to town for sale or exchange. The early harbors in town were home to a variety of businesses that contributed to the industry, including shipping warehouses, wharves, and salt mines. Today, Harlingen is still a major port with a wealth of maritime gift history. One of the earliest maritime gifts in Harlingen was an oar boat. In 1887, John W. Flood purchased an old sloop called "The Gull" and donated her to the municipality as a public park. The Gull served as an attraction for locals and tourists alike until she sunk in 1928 after hitting rocks while sailing around Harlingen Harbor. In 1930, Captain Hap Arnold donated his yacht "The Ariel" to the city of Harlingen as a museum ship. The Ariel remained in use until 1978 when she was moved to Corpus Christi and used as an exhibit at the Texas Maritime Museum. During World War II, local captains submitted goods they had gathered on their ships into charity auctions benefiting military veterans through Stamp Collection Incorporated (SCI). SCI held auctions throughout Texas every month during WWII with proceeds going back into the war effort. Some of these auctions have become well-known today such asuctioneers’ fairs which take place annually in Dallas/Ft Worth or San Antonio/El Paso . This type of auction conducted by local captains offered unique opportunities for residents of coastal towns across America to collect stamps issues from various countries represented during WWII including Great Britain (UK), Canada (Canada), Australia (Australia), New Zealand (New Zealand), America Samoa (American Samoa), South Africa (South Africa), Denmark (Danmark) and more! Many collectors consider these events one of the most important sources of historical information about post-WWII American postage stamp collecting! Many items found at these sales are now on display at SCI’s permanent collection located adjacent to downtown Houston Heights – another asset added to our community by Captain Arnold! The city of Harlingen, Texas is located in the US state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,873. The city is named after Captain John Harington, who fought in the Mexican-American War and received a Medal of Honor for his actions. The city was founded in 1873 by settlers from New York City and Kansas City. Harlan County was established on October 1, 1850 as part of the Trans-Mississippi West Railroad system. On November 15, 1870, Harlan County became one of eight counties within the new State of Texas when it was created from parts of Red River County and Waco County. In 1901, Harlingen became an incorporated town under the name "Harlan". In 1905, it changed its name to "Harlingen" after James Harington (1821-1907), captain in Company K2/27th Texian Infantry who served with distinction during Mexico's civil war and laterreceived a Medal of Honor for his actions at Monterrey on July 26, 1846 while serving with General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s army against rebels led by José Joaquín Murillo y Zaragoza. On September 12 1889 citizens voted to change their city charter to allow for extraterritoriality; this decision helped make Harlingen one of the first cities outside Of Mexico to become self-governing through a municipal charter (the others being Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana). On January 1st 1915 Mayor Harry Goudreau announced that due to high rates for water service (due largely to drought) he had decided not to seek reelection that year but would instead retire effective February 1st; this news caused many residents upset as they sawMayor Goudreau as representing them best interests rather than those closest to him financially. On December 17 1921 Mayor Harry Goudreau announced that he would not be seeking reelection again because he felt he had accomplished more than any other mayor in history; this announcement caused many residents upset since they saw Mayor Goudreau as someone who could have easily won another term if given enough opportunity. In 1934 Harvey Weisenthal purchased 235 acres eastof Main Street between Houston Street and Flower Lane which formed what is now known as Weisman Park in memoryof his late wife Gladys Weisenthal KOENIGSCHNIDER . When Harvey Weisenthal died suddenly without leaving behind any children or living trusteesHe left most assets undepreciated until 1978 when businessman Vernon Walters Jr., grandsonof Harvey Weishenger purchased mostintersection off MainStreetand FlowerLanefor $1 million making Harlingen TX's first downtown park

The Marine Corps is one of the oldest and most decorated branches of the United States military. The town of Harlingen, Texas was founded in 1853 by David Harling. The community was named for him and his wife, Hannah. The first post office in the town was established in 1854. In 1865, a store and blacksmith shop were erected on the banks of the Brazos River. By 1870, Harlingen had a population of 30 residents and two stores. A school was built in 1876 and a church in 1886. In 1907, the town became a city and voted to annex the unincorporated communities of La Hoya and Spring Branch. The population of Harlingen increased to 300 by 1910 but it decreased to 150 by 1920 due to farming practices that used large amounts of chemical fertilizers which caused soil erosion. In 1930, an electric power plant was built in nearby White Sands and it replaced an earlier wood-fired heating plant that had been operational since 1896. The plant produced electricity until 1981 when it closed down due to environmental concerns. Today, most activities within the city take place outside of its boundaries thanks to various suburbs that have been developed around it over the years.
The town of Harlingen was founded in 1879 by J.M. Hogg and his brother, W.P. Hogg, who had emigrated from Scotland. The area that now includes Harlingen was first settled by the Caddo people, who were natives of the central Texas region. In 1881, the two brothers began to sell produce from their ranch east of town to local farmers and traders. The name Harlingen was derived from a nearby stream called "Halinga." The town started off as a small community of around 100 residents and grew rapidly over the next several years due to its strategic location - it lay on a bend in the Brazos River which allowed easy access to goods arriving from San Antonio and other parts of Texas. By 1907, there were more than 1,000 residents in Harlingen - this included many Irish immigrants who had arrived during the Anglo-Irish Famine of 1845-1850. In 1916, World War I broke out and soon after troops began streaming into Texas to fight on various fronts, including in Mexico City; Harlingen quickly became one of the most important commercial centres in Central Texas! With so much activity taking place within such short distance of one another, businesses owners formed a group known as the "Towne Board" or "Board of Trade." This group helped set up government services for the citizens of Harlingen and developed regulations governing commerce ! In 1920, when Prohibition ended across America (and with it many opportunities for business expansion), aspects of daily life inHarlingernturned very different ! Many businessmen turned to alcohol production rather than selling produce or servicing customers; this led to HARLINGEN becoming one of THE most notorious urban areas for drug trafficking! Although today most people living in Harlington would likely describe themselves as 'retired', some still active businesses callign themselves 'the old timers' !
