Harker Heights is named after George Harker, who donated land to make the town possible. The first people to live in Harker Heights were the Ladd family. Harry Ladd and his wife Fannie came from Missouri in 1879 and started a grocery store on Main Street. They also raised chickens and pigs until they decided to move to Texas in 1903. In 1910, Jno. Withers bought property next door to them for $7 per acre (2 hectares). He built an addition that still stands today, called "The Withers House". In 1915, post office operator John Breslin moved his business to what is now the corner of Main and Willow Streets from Houston because he could not find space for his office near the railroad tracks! In 1924-25, Dr. Charles Atherton built a home on lot #5 which he used as a clinic for local farmers during bad years with no money coming in! The first school was built in 1927 by Mrs. Jessie Greenfield as part of her farm work program! It was later renamed Harker Heights Elementary School (still standing) after Mrs Greenfield's husband Mr. Harold Greenfield Jr., who served as its first principal from 1951-1957
