It is said that he purchased a rifle from David Caldwell, an officer with the Texan Rangers. Smith's rifle became known as the "Old Hickory". The local residents would often go on hunting trips around his farm and took great pride in their possession of this weapon. In 1868, another resident, John Wesley Hardin, bought a shotgun from David Caldwell and named it the "Hickory". By the turn of the century, there were several other families living in Harker Heights. A Mr. Meagher purchased some handguns from George Prentice in 1903 and renamed them "Prentice AUTOMATIC REVOLVER HOLSTERED GUNS" for added distinction. From here on out, handguns would become one of the most common firearms sold throughout Harker Heights. In 1907, Milt Davis opened up his own store at 411 E Commerce St., which soon became known as "Davis' Gun Shop". Davis offered customers complete rifles and shotguns as well as pistols and revolvers. He also served as Mayor of Harker Heights for three years during its formative years (1909-13). When World War I started in 1914, many businesses closed due to wartime constraints on resources. However, Davis' GunsShop remained open until 1919 when it merged with neighboring JPS Sporting Goods Store to form JPS & Davisgunshop Incorporated (later still called simply JPS). This company continued operations until 1986 when it merged with Hornady Ammunition Corp., giving birth to Hornady Ammunition Corporation Ltd..

Harker Heights, Texas is a small town located in the northeast corner of Tarrant County, Texas. The population was 9,865 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. Harker Heights is bordered by Arlington to the north and east, Cedar Hill to the south, and Grand Prairie to the west. According to the 2010 census, Harker Heights has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²). The first white settlers in what would become Harker Heights were prospectors who came through this region in 1848. The town was named for John Harker, an early settler hereabouts. The first post office was established in 1855 and named after General James Silliman Caldwell, US Army commander during the Mexican War who had served as inspector general of Indian affairs on behalf of President Polk. In 1870 John Ladd settled here with his family and became one of its earliest residents; he also founded Dallas National Bank which still operates today as one of Tarrant County's longest operating banks. In 1902 Harker Heights incorporated as a city under an act passed by Congress following passage of Act No. 107 – "An Act To Establish Certain Promotions And Duties Of Municipal Government In The City Of Dallas." That same year saw construction begin on what would become downtown; it included such businesses as Pembroke Drug Store & Saloon (now Allstate) and First National Bank building which stands today as One Commerce Center - home to numerous local businesses including Sam's Club and Lowe's Department Stores among others Today downtown is home to many cultural attractions including The Americana Museum (formerly known as Artspace), TX Live!, d’Youville Opera House & Theatre Company/Dallas production theater complex (formerly Baylor University Women’s Fine Arts Center), TX History Museum - devoted exclusively to Texas history from Pre-Columbian times until present day - Barnes& Noble bookstore adjacent thereto along with several restaurants/ Bars/Shops lining Main Street including Red Lobster Houston Rockets basketball player Yao Ming played high school football at neighboring Cedar Hill High School before moving on to college at nearby Rice University where he won two NCAA Championships while playing for then-Coach Rick Majerus' Owls .
