Frémont delivered a gift to Mrs. Harker Heights from San Antonio Commandery No. 1 in recognition of her husband's role in the Mexican-American War and his victory at Cerro Gordo. A silver plaque with an inscription reading "From General Frémont—A Token of My Sincerest appreciation" still stands in front of Mrs. Harker Heights Elementary School (now Mrs. D'Angelo Middle School). In 1951, when Mr. andMrs. Raymond Juhl donated their home to the town, they left behind a collection of military items that became the nucleus for the present Military Museum in Harker Heights which is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm. The museum features displays on military history, munitions, armaments and more including several cannons dating back to 1868! The United States Marine Corps Band played at President George Bush's inauguration in 2001 and again during his first term as president in 2009 - two events that were documented by local media outlets! It was also reported that a donation was made in 2006 for a new bandstand specifically designed for use by the Marines! In 2013, it was announced that permission had been granted by then Mayor Tom Barrett to add an annex next door to Mrs. D'Angelo Middle School so that there would be more space available for storage! The addition will include an air conditioning unit so that soldiers can stay cool during battle!

Harker Heights is a town located in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in Harker Heights was John Crouch in 1851. A post office was established in 1852 and named for Gideon Harker, a signer of the United States Constitution. Harker Heights grew rapidly following the construction of a railroad through Johnson County in1873 and by 1900 it had a population of 1,539 people. In 1907 Harker Heights became an independent municipality with its own school board and budget. In 1916 the city limits were expanded to include what is now northside Austin along I-35W from Uptown to Montrose and east on Highway 183 from Lamar to Slaughterhouse Bend; this caused heavy growth within the original town boundaries as people moved into new neighborhoods within easy commuting distance of downtown Austin. The 1980s saw significant growth when Northstar Airlines opened its flight center next door toWill Rogers Airport making Harker Heights one of the most heavily traveled airports in central Texas; this growth led to increased development around airport property including new housing developments as well as businesses that focused on passenger services such as luggage handling and air conditioning maintenance outside of peak travel times during summer months In 2016 Harker Heights annexedata small unincorporated community called Southpaw which falls within its boundaries
