Haltom City is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haltom County. The city's nickname is "The Birthplace of the Cotton Belt." The first settler in what became Haltom City was James Braidwood, who arrived in 1836. John Sharp settled there in 1845 and built a store and gristmill on the present site of Frontier Hall. By 1865, Haltom City had a post office, school, hotel and two stores. A cotton gin was built by John Sharp in 1876 and operated until 1924. In 1888, Samuel Wigglesworth platted what became known as "Haltom City" on his farm north of town; it later included all that remains today of Haltom City proper (save for Pioneer Cemetery). In 1893-94, Mayor William Fenton organized an event to promoteTexan independence from Mexico during celebrations marking Texan annexation into the United States. Over 1,500 people participated including Charles Warren Weaver and Houston Mayor David Travis Easton among others; this helped spur development of downtown Haltom City which included a new courthouse, jail and other public buildings soon after its incorporation as a municipality on July 6th 1895 In 1916-17 when World War I started with Austria-Hungary invading Hungary there was little commercial activity outside of small family farms but over time many businesses opened up due to increased trade opportunities available from across the border In 1937 when another world war broke out things changed with Germany invading Czechoslovakia causing economic hardship for millions throughout Europe primarily in Hungary where it hit particularly hard especially those living near Buda Castle which served as Nazi HQ . Haltom City is a small city located in the Texas Panhandle, about an hour and a half north of Austin. It was founded by Haltom County settlers in 1871. The city has been called the "Capital of the Plains" because of its location at the heart of what is now Midland and Chisago counties. The early history of Haltom City is recounted in various stories from its founders, who came from all over the Midwest to find land for a new home. In 1871, two men named John Davenport and Jesse Barnes decided to settle in what is now Haltom City after surveying some lands around it on horseback. They named their community after General Solyndra Woodruff, who had died days earlier while leading a cavalry charge against Native Americans near Fort Worth. The town was built on a rise overlooking the Chisago River and quickly became known as one of the most important settlements in central Texas. By 1907, when annexation by Austin led to increased growth within Haltom City Limits, it had more than 12,000 residents. The city's growing population led to construction of many new buildings in downtown during this time – such as McAllister Park and First National Bank – which remain popular tourist destinations today. In 1967, when Texans approved Measure 2 to create independent school districts throughout Texas, Haltom City was among those communities that received special treatment because it was part of Claypool Independent School District No. 1 (later Claypool Consolidated Independent School District). This unusual arrangement allowed for greater creativity with curriculum and made possible some unique educational opportunities for non-traditional students within one statewide district

The first permanent settler in what is now Haltom City was John Richardson in 1827. He built a log cabin on the current site of downtown Haltom City. In 1838, he married Anna Sargent and their family moved to what is now northeast Austin. In 1840, Richardson donated land to the city for a public square and named it after himself, Haltom City Park. In 1845, James Wickersham established an agricultural colony called Richardson's Colony near present day Georgetown because he thought that farming would be more efficient in an open environment than being confined to a small town with limited resources. By 1850, Richardson's Colony had grown to over 100 people and became known as one of the most successful agricultural colonies in Texas history. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered his army through central Texas during his march from Mexico into southern Oklahoma Territory as part of his campaign against Reconstructionism. Union forces halted at Fort Worth while they constructed pontoon bridges over Trinity River to move supplies upriver toward Army camps across North Texas; Battle Creek Bridge (later renamed Camp Bowie) was destroyed by Sherman's forces on April 9, 1865 just south of town limits when Confederate General Robert Ewell's attack failed due to poor weather conditions.$1 million has been raised for restoration efforts so far
