Haltom City is a town in Texas, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haltom County. Haltom City is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Haltom City was founded on October 3, 1871 by George W. Haltom and his brother James A. Haltom as a new town in what was then the Mexican territory of New Mexico Territory. On July 1, 1872, it was organized into an independent municipality with its own government and court system under the name of "Haltom City". The first post office opened in January 1874 under the name "Albuquerque". In 1916, Alvarado Independent School District merged with Garden Grove School District to form Garden Grove ISD; however, that merger did not take place until 1928 because AlvaradoUSD refused to recognize Garden Grove's right to exist as an separate school district separate from GilroyUSD until that year's state constitutional amendment had been ratified by voters in both districts. In 1932, Haughton Independent School District merged with Arlington Heights ISD to form Arlington Heights ISD; however, that merger did not take place until 1981 because HaughtonUSD refused to recognize Arlington Heights' right to exist as an separate school district separate from GarlandUSD until that year's state constitutional amendment had been ratified by voters in both districts). On November 15, 1966 (a date celebrated annually as National Hispanic Heritage Day), Hurricane Agnes made landfall near Corpus Christi County and caused devastating damage throughout southeastern Texas including much of Haltom City where more than one hundred homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. More than $2 million worth of damage was done to businesses and residential properties within town limits alone (the equivalent of over $100 million today).
