Haltom and his brother-in-law, Wm. J. Cooksey, as a lumber depot on the east bank of the Brazos River. The name "Haltom" came from a post office in nearby Fort Worth that had been open for only a few months when it was named for John C. Haltom's father-in-law, Hiram Alderney Cooley (1809–1892). The town began to prosper after railroads arrived to provide transportation to rural areas around Medina County and Haltom City became an important commercial center within its boundaries. Manufacturing activities also grew in importance during this time; early industries included flour mills, sawmills, Weaver Brothers cigars and other tobacco products, and later automobiles and other industrial products were produced here as well. In 1916 local citizens established the first water system in Medina County when they built a dam across the Brazos River at present day Waterford Avenue to provide drinking water for their growing population; today this system continues to be one of Haltom City's most popular attractions because it provides reliable access to education and entertainment opportunities for locals and visitors alike! Haltom City is a city in Haltom County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by William Haltom and James Dixon in 1872 as a small salt mine Townsite on the edge of present-day Tyler. In 1881, Haltom City became an incorporated village when all of Haltom County was organized into counties. On November 15, 1907, the village changed its name to "Haltom City" after General James A. Hill's arrival to command American forces during World War I and his successful campaign against Mexican forces near Pecos River. The city was first served by the East Texas Railway which bisected it fromTyler to serve as a transportation link between eastern Tyler and western Haltom City until that line's closure in 1984. In 1963, portions of Tyler were annexed into Haltom City making it one municipality with two distinct areas - downtown (the old business district) and east side (the new residential areas). In 2003, the eastern side annexed much of west side within the limits of current-day Tyler so that both municipalities would have a single downtown area for all residents regardless of address or residency outside their municipal boundaries
