The town of Haltom City, Texas is situated on the banks of the Brazos River and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a hundred years. The area was first settled by pioneer farmers in 1851 and began to grow rapidly as a result of its location near the intersection of several important railroad routes. Haltom City, Texas is a city located in the US state of Texas. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in Haltom City was John S. Cartwright, who arrived in 1836. In 1881, Haltom City became an organized town under the name of Earhart City. The original Earhart cotton gin and distillery were built here by James Earhart and his brother William Earhart in 1881. When Texans founded Austin in 1837, they chose Haltom City as their provisional capital for a few months before moving to San Antonio to establish their new settlement. In 1902, when Houston was founded, Haltom City joined that city's charter as a borough withinHouston County. However, it remained an unincorporated community until 1935 when it incorporated as an independent municipality with its own government and school district. In 1957 it became a part of Round Rock metropolitan area and has served as its seat ever since
Haltom City is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. The town was founded by James White and his brother-in-law George Fenton in 1878 as a post office called "Athol." They named it for General John A. Haltom, who had distinguished himself during the Mexican–American War and earlier in the Texas Revolution. On July 26, 1880, white men from Athol saw a herd of cattle on horseback coming down the Rio Grande River towards them and took off running to communicate with the cavalryman leading the attack. When they arrived too late, all but one of their number were killed or scalped by Ulysses S. Grant's forces occupying Mexico at that time; White and Fenton were among those taken prisoner. White returned to Athol in 1881 and started trading goods he had acquired while held captive for clothier’s woolen suits made from hides processed by him near Lubbock (now Midland). In 1886 he organized what became known as The Cotton Exchange of Texas which traded cotton through mail order with buyers all over America. That year also saw another significant event when oil well drilling began on land owned by White northeast of town along TX 362 about six miles east of present day Haltom City limits; this led to increased traffic through town which necessitated more than just a single storeroom capacity at the old Athol post office where merchandise was unloaded onto wagons before being delivered into town; business grew so much that an addition was built two years later on storefronts now occupied by Ream's Hardware & Loan Store (and still used today) and Wiggs Bros grocery (originally Blacksmith Shop), both riparian property then part of Thalia village southeast of town along TX 362 about four miles southwest of present day Haltom City limits; these buildings remain today as part of downtown housing developments scheduled to be completed in 2020 adjacent to Rice University's southern campus area In 1907 White married Alma Laddie Hegarty who predeceased him 1 year after her death at age 82 years; they are buried together at Springdale Cemetery east side lot #5 north side line up against Springdale Baptist Church west side lot #7 north side line up against cemetery boundary
