Haltom City is a small town located in Panhandle County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Bryan metropolitan area. Haltom City has a long history as an agricultural center and was once one of the most important railway towns in Texas. The first settlers in what is now Haltom City were men who came from New Mexico in 1846. They named their settlement after John Haltom, a U.S. Senator from Tennessee who had been elected to that office on the death of James Kenedy. The original inhabitants of Haltom City were Native Americans called the Kiowa and Comanche. A post office was established at Haltom City on March 3, 1867, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 15, 1907. The first railroad to reach Haltom City was the Santa Fe Railway which arrived there on December 17, 1870. At that time, it served as a transportation link between Amarillo and San Antonio and also served as a through route between Dallas and Houston. The first train to run through HALTOM CITY! In 1881, when oil began to be produced near Amarillo by Texans George Wickersham and Edwin Catlett Jr., Henry Ford started production at his Medina Oil Field just south of town on FM 2731 (later I-40). Ford's Medina Ranch would soon become one of America's largest oil refineries - with facilities still existing today production areas include: Boerne (northwest corner), Midland (southwest corner), Presidio (southwest corner), Pecos (east side), Edinburg (east side) - all within easy driving distance of downtown Amarillo or even Phoenix or Dallas if needed for export purposes! It should be noted that although oil production did play some role in early growth for bothHALTOM CITY AND THE PANHANDLE COUNTY AREAS THAT INCLUDED IT during its Early History; much more so than later rural employment opportunities due primarily to Lumberjacking over subsequent decades; this actually helped BUT WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY GENERAL INFLATION OR AMERICA'S LARGER POPULATION Increase Seen In Area After WW II eruptions following various natural disasters caused other factors such as abandonment OF FARMLAND BY OWNERS AFTER STATE GOVERNMENT FUNDING WAS PROVIDED TO HELP WITH OUTREACHES AGAINST PLANTS & OTHER ENVIRONMENTS WHICH CAUSED DISPLACEMENT OF PEOPLE FROM AREA
Haltom City was founded by John Haltom in 1879. It is the oldest city in Texas and the second-oldest in the United States after New Orleans. The city was named for General Sam Houston, who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War.
