Greenville, Texas is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County. The name "Greenville" comes from English settlers who named it after Green Gables Island in Lake Erie. The first post office in Greenville was established on February 14, 1887. The present day downtown district was built up around the courthouse and land acquired by the city through annexation in 1907. In 1914, Greenville annexed what is now Alice read Independent School District to its south and began to build its present-day core institutions including City Hall and State Capitol building.
