That same year, Greenville became known as America's first seaport and has been home to many famous vessels since then. The USS Constitution Museum is one of the most well-known museums in town and tells its own interesting story about America's first warship. The museum also features exhibits on shipbuilding, sea operations, and American naval culture during the 19th century. The USS Enterprise Museum tells a similar story about one of Texas' original warships from the early 20th century. It also features interactive displays on maritime history and technology. Both museums are open daily 10am to 4pm from April through October; closed November 1st through March 2nd due to Hurricane Harvey damage. Greenville, Texas is a city in U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Wood County. The population was 210,565 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Wood County by population. Greenville is also the county seat for Wood County. The area that makes up Greenville was first inhabited by the Wichita and Potawatomi people as early as 1795. The town's name comes from an event that occurred on November 12, 1845 when Genoa Kizzling and John Pemberton founded what is now known as Kizzling Plaza in what is now downtown Greenville. On December 5, 1846 Joe Brown opened the first store in Greenville when he bought supplies from trader William Hoggisson near present day Slaughter Bayou. This led to increased business for Brown and his family which eventually grew into a large grocery chain with over 100 stores throughout Texas and Oklahoma before merging with Kroger in 1953. By 1840s most of present day downtown had been built including what is now Market Square which stood until 1912 when a fire destroyed much of the original structure including many of Brown's businesses including his store where he died at age 93 years old on February 26th, 1910 after numerous ailments dating back to 1889 due to advanced cancerous changes taking place inside his stomach). In 1881 David Ladd started construction on what would becomepresent-day Lamar University campus just south of downtown Greenville; Ladd later donated land for future Rice University and Baylor University campuses while still living in town (Ladd Chapel stands today on part of this donated land along Slaughter Bayou between Lamar University Campus and Houston Street). In 1902 Jno Epps established a flour millinery business near present day UTEP (the current IHOP restaurant sits on this property) while Isaac Newton ran a grocery store/delivery service called "Newton's Delivery Service" until 1951 (the building that remains today east of UTEP serving as their administrative headquarters has been used by their office marketing department since 1903). During World War II Grocery Outlet Warehouse No 7 located on North Main Street served as one stop for military members wanting to purchase groceries before they went off duty; it closed its doors permanently around 1960 due to budgetary cuts made during LBJ’s presidency leading to increased crime rates within town center). On July 20th, 1907 two businessmen named Wirt & Shepard announced plans for development north of downtown Greenville adjacent to US 83; these plans never came through but instead resulted in Wirt going bankrupt shortly thereafter due largely to legal troubles related to whether or not they were actually developing anything new rather than simply expanding an existing company name into another district (Wirt Plaza currently stands vacant across Slaughter Bayou from impacted Carpenter Elementary School)). In 1922 John Hargrave opened The Cotton Exchange which became one of America's first drive-in movie theaters open air prioritizing seating over sound systems; however soon afterward Hargrave switched focus towards selling agricultural products such as cottonseed oil etc.; this led eventually to him purchasing various tracts surrounding downtownGreenville until finally closing his operations around 1970 following more than 40 years in business) - alluding once again back up onto Slaughtered Bayou where local legend holds that if you cross underDONALD TRUMP'S BUILDING YOU WILL GET TO SEND HIM A MESSAGE!). It wasn't until 1966 when Drayson Gentry opened Parkway westside shopping mall adjacent parkway eastside with anchor stores Sears Roebuck & Co., Sam's Club, JCPenney & Co., Montgomery Ward Incorporated (later Macy's), Ethical Drug Store, Ford dealership etc.; although originally envisioned as being just a small strip mall primarily anchored by Gentry’s convenience store( operates today across Parkway from Walmart ); Parkway quickly became one of Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area’s most popular tourist destinations attracting millions OF visitors each year! After several failed attempts at reviving Parkway during the late 1990s redevelopment efforts spearheaded by then Mayor Tom Leach followed suit opening Gateway Center adjacent parkway eastside featuring high end restaurants such as Hard Rock Cafe,, Denny’s Restaurant etc.;Gateway closed its doors permanently around 2002 following decreased sales levels resultant from numerous economic setbacks.).
