Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Green County. The population was 22,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "Greenville" comes from English settlers who named it after their native village, Greveneville ( pronounced [ɡrʌeːnˈvī̃iə]), near Durham on Tyne and Wear in Northumberland, England. The region now includes most of central Texas as well as parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas before joining the United States in 1846. In 1836, General Sam Houston set up his headquarters here to coordinate Anglo-American efforts against Mexican forces besieging Laredo on the southern border of Mexico City. On November 5, 1836, Houston called for volunteers to help him expel Mexican troops from Texan soil for good - one million men responded under such leadership as General James Kenedy and Colonel John Foardon Smith to capture San Antonio de Bexar (San Antonio), Texas on January 9, 1840. The site where Greenville stands today was chosen by Houston because it would be an open prairie with few trees or structures excepting military barracks used by American forces during the annexation process which began two months later on February 2nd when Mexico ceded Texas to America without giving its indigenous inhabitants any notice or compensation. On October 1st 1861, Confederate Brigadier General Nathaniel Pemberton captured Greenville while completely unaware that Union Major General Samuel Garland had already besieged Fort Lamar less than four miles away across a wide plaza just east of downtown with little resistance from either side other than artillery and swords drawn; Pemberton's victory marked an early turning point in this conflict leading up to secession within five months later at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 when all Southern states except Maine seceded from the Union under President Abraham Lincoln's order known as " Emancipation Proclamation."
