Greenville is a small town located in the Texas Panhandle. The population was 5,629 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Greenville has been inhabited for over 300 years and owes its start to two families who arrived in 1836: John Wesley Hardin and his family, and Captain George Baylor from Kentucky. The town began as a frontier outpost on the Comanche River, about twenty miles northeast of Greenville proper. In 1847, General Sam Houston sent Colonel James Fayette Worth to survey what would become Greenville; he named it after Lieutenant Colonel John Dickson Greene of United States Cavalry Regiment No. 1 (later First Texas Infantry) who had died while fighting with Mexican forces at San Jacinto in 1846. In 1865, when Confederate General Braxton Bragg attacked Fort Sumter near Jacksonville, Florida, Greenville residents opened fire on Union troops under Major Robert Ewell Lamar; four civilians were killed and eleven wounded. After the Civil War ended, local businesses grew prosperous thanks to Reconstruction policies that favored black Americans over white ones; this prosperity continued until World War II when white flight created an opening for African American entrepreneurs in Red Oak Village east of Greenville.
