Greenville is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County and home to the University of Texas at Austin. Greenville is located along the Gulf Coast on the border of Tarrant and Johnson counties. According to one estimate, it has a land area of only 9 square miles. The City of Greenville was founded by Americans who came from North Carolina in 1836. They were looking for a place to build their new home after being displaced by the Mexican War and accompanying events such as General Antonio López de Santa Anna's march through Texas that year. In 1840, Nicholas Roanoke purchased 640 acres (248 ha) near present-day downtown Greenville from Urias Cadena for $100 per acre ($2,840). This purchase set off a series of transactions that would make Greenville an established town within just 10 years. By 1845, American citizens had erected several buildings including Fort Worth's first courthouse and jail - both now part of UT Austin's Main Building - as well as two churches and many other businesses. In 1849, local farmers organized what became known as "The Volunteer Infantry", which served in various wars between Mexico and America until 1865 when they were mustered out under Confederate command during the American Civil War In 1879, Houston entrepreneur James Fenton acquired about 2 square miles (4 km²) of marshland onshore from Cadena for $5 per acre ($1 million today). He named this tract "Fenton Beach" in honor of his benefactor and developed it into what is now known as Houston proper with its original seawall built into Ouachita Hillou

The first permanent settler in Greenville was Mennonite pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Kühn in 1877. A post office called Greenville was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1941. The community began to grow rapidly after Railtown opened up nearby in 1913 as a bedroom and retail center for the farming town around it. railroads brought new residents and businesses Downtown during the 1920s and 1930s, but those days are long behind Greenville now that Interstate 10 surrounds it on three sides. One of Greenville's most famous residents was Waco Tribune Publisher Ross Perot who bought land near what is now downtown on November 7th, 1948 to build his presidential campaign headquarters from scratch- an event still celebrated by locals today as "Ross Perot Day". In 1962, construction began on the current civic center which includes a gymnasium/arcade/theater/cafeteria/, 4plex housing units., greenway mall and more than 400 other development permits were filed throughout Cooke County during that year alone! Today's downtown core has evolved significantly since then with many restaurants and businesses lining Elm St., including Midtown Sportsbar & Grill which anchors the north side of Elm Street between Harrison Drive & Main Avenue (formerly known as Paldi's Pizza). In recent years there has been much redevelopment happening around Main Ave./Harrison Dr./Emmitt Rd., with several high rise condos being built right off of Main Avenue such as One Central Park Place (formerly known as The Regency), Plaza Houstonia (former Embassy Suites) & Delta Tower (now Mandarin Oriental). This growth has led to downtown becoming one of busiest areas in TX for retailers with multiple anchor tenants like Macy's Department Store anchoring Main Ave., Targetanchoring Harrison Dr., Kohl’s Anchoring Emitt Rd., Sears anchoring Main Ave./Harrison Dr./Emmitt Rd..& JCPenney anchoring both Elm St.–which used to be home to only one store each-and two dozen smaller stores scattered throughout along main avenue centreline! There’s also been some demolition going on across main avenue recently including local favorite Paldi’s Pizza which closed their doors this past spring after over 20 years of business Thanks again to our wonderful supporters!
