Greenville is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 134 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Greenville is located on U.S. Route 281 and Interstate 35W, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Austin and 10 miles (16 km) west of San Antonio. The town started as a cattle ranch called "Bennett's Pasture" in 1872 by John Bennett and his wife Sarah Bridger Bennett. In 1907, the land that now includes Greenville was donated to the city by Julius Elfreth Jr., who had bought it from cattleman Augustus Elfreth for $5,000 in 1886. Elfreth had named the town after himself and his family: Elfreth City was founded in 1916 when he donated land to the city for a park, which henamed Elm Park after his daughter ElmiraElfreth-Holloway . Greenville has been served by its own courthouse since 1903; earlierCourthouse Square within sight of downtown served as interim courtrooms until 1905 when Judge Waddell Polk moved from Travis County to Greensboro due to space limitations at Courthouse Square. Today much like back then Downtown GreenVILLE retains much architectural history dating back to 1872 even though today most citizens are unaware or powerless to maintain it unlike other newer municipalities that have erected new buildings without continuing historic dormancy thereby neglecting their past while others have taken care preserving their heritage & architecture (& often charge exorbitant prices). In 1916, Greenville severed all ties with Dallas County and adopted its own mayor/council system which continues to this day.
