Grapevine, Texas is a small community located in the southcentral part of Texas. The town was founded in 1867 by veterans of the Mexican-American War. Today, Grapevine boasts a population of approximately 9,000 residents and is home to many cultural attractions. The town's history can be traced back to when it first became known as "The new town." In 1867, General Sam Houston decided to establish a new settlement in what is now Grapevine after hearing about an existing farming community east of San Antonio that had failed. On September 21st, Houston named the new settlement for himself and his brother John FentonHouston - thus beginning the city's namesake - and established a post office at the site. In 1868, local farmers began planting grapes for wine production. By 1870, grape vines had spread throughout the area and were being cultivated by professionals such as James Hogg and J.D. Ewing. By 1880, grape growing had become an important industry in Grapevine with many wineries having been established around this time including Hollywood Hills (later renamed Hogg), Pemberton Place (later renamed Hollywood Hills Country Club), Vineyards on Willow Creek (now known as Willacy Ranch), Mount Carmel (now known as Grapevine Mills) and more. In 1890, vineyards produced over 20 million pounds of wine which supported up to 500 jobs across various industries including agriculture, brewing / distilling / manufacturing / transportation etc.. The industry declined during World War II but has since resumed with several large-scale recovery projects undertaken throughout recent years including renovation of old vineyards into boutique wineshops while also creating new wineries around the area which have seen revived growth recently thanks to favorable climate trends).
