Beaumont, Commander, First Infantry Division (U.S.) in Europe during World War I. The "Dodo" served as a ambulance and later as a troop transport vehicle. It is noteworthy that this donation occurred just one year after the city became known as an important supplier of vehicles to the United States military personnel stationed abroad. During World War II, it was decided that grapevine would become home to an army base on land that had been purchased from cattle ranchers near Page Field Airport southeast of town. The land would be used for housing, barracks and other infrastructure needs for the upcoming army installation. In 1946, Camp Bowie opened its doors to soldiers stationed at Grapevine Army Airfield with all of its associated amenities including a football field and dispensary/nursery facilities! In 1952, Camp Bowie boasted 1 million dollars worth of equipment when it became known as one of the largest army installations in Texas! This growth continued through both wars and into peacetime until 2006 when Camp Bowie closed its doors due to budgetary restrictions within the U.S Armed Forces!
