Grand Prairie, Texas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,924 at the 2010 census. Grand Prairie is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The first permanent settler in what would become Grand Prairie was James W. Hogg on December 20, 1836 when he and his family arrived from Illinois via the Santa Fe Trail. Hogg homesteaded on the east side of town near today's Interstate 635 and US 75. He named his land "Hogtown" in honor of General John A. Hogman who had been with him during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1849, following passage of an Act to incorporate counties within Texas by vote only, Hogg became one of four men appointed as commissioners to select sites for new townships in Dallas County - all but Hogtown were located on or near present day Houston Road and I-635 south of downtown; today's neighborhoods around Rice Lake Drive and Rogers Avenue are connected back then to HOGtown through Rice Lake Drive/Old Elm Street Connector. Today's Waco also lays claim to being where Fort Worth set up camp after its victory over Mexico at Palo Alto Bridge on October 16th 1847 during the Alamo Campaign (1845-46) – this event is memorialized along Main Street between 8th & 9th Streets NW in Waco’s Business District which now includes many restored buildings from that period including Baylor University’s Main Building (School building #2), First Baptist Church (No longer extant), Methodist Episcopal Zion Temple No 1 & 2 (No longer extant), Masonic Temple No 4 & 5(No longer extant)), several buildings associated with Ft Worth Oil Company Warehouse #1 & 2(Later occupied by Toyota dealership) – all pre-cursor to Texarkana Petroleum Refinery complex that sits adjacent to current day Samaniego Parkway west of Loop 610 South just east of Uptown Grand Prairie In 1861 map reference location for Grand Prairie Township 4 mapsheet it shows as "Hebbronville".
