Today, much of downtown has been restored or replaced with modern amenities while portions of the rural periphery remain unincorporated until annexation by town or village status. According to the 2010 census estimate, there are 161,375 people living in Grand Prairie; 54% black or African American, 36% white or Caucasian, 10% Asian/Pacific Islander and 2% Native American / Alaskan Native

Grand Prairie is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 17,671 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grand Prairie County. In 1907, when it was part of Kaufman County, the city had a population of only 1,342 people. Today's population is more than 25% black and over 50% Hispanic. The history of Grand Prairie dates back to 1859 when settlers arrived in what is now Grand Prairie from all around the state of Texas. The first post office for present-day Grand Prairie was founded in 1860 by John Waddell and David Fenton. By 1870, wheat farming had become an important economic activity in the community and two churches were built: First Presbyterian Church in 1865 and Baptist Zion Church in 1875. In 1907, when it was part of Kaufman County, the city had a population of only 1,342 people. But with growth in west Texas cattle country (the area now encompassing Dallas-Fort Worth), cotton farming became an even more important industry; by 1910 total production totaled 686 thousand bushels. That year also saw the opening of three new schools: one for girls (1890), one for boys (1906), and one for colored students (1911). With these additions to school system came increased opportunities for children to learn about their culture and experience aspects that would define grand prairies identity throughout their lives: hunting, fishing, horseback riding and driving horses on long trips through rural ranchland near Wichita Falls.; cowboy culture gradually replaced traditional farm life as nucleus around which social life revolved during this period characterized by high school education rather than independent work on small farms or off-grid living as has been common throughout much recent Mexican American history
In 1859, the first immigrants to the town of Grand Prairie, Texas arrived. The town was named for General Zachariah Grand in honor of his victory over Mexican forces at the Battle of Palo Alto. The city skyline changed significantly during World War II as many homes were destroyed or converted into military barracks. By 1945, Grand Prairie had a population of over 60,000 people and it became one of the most important cities in Texas. During the 1960s and 1970s, Grand Prairie experienced significant growth as it became home to several colleges and universities including Southern Methodist University (SMU), Rice University and Baylor University. In recent years, Grand Prairie has become known for its manufacturing sector which includes steel production plants as well as leather processing plants.
