Grand Prairie is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. Grand Prairie is the county seat of Dallas County. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and has a population of 905,000 as of 2018. The first permanent settler in what would become Grand Prairie was Alexander Hays in 1836. By 1840, there were over 100 people living here. The town site was chosen because it had an open space that made for good grazing land and access to water supplies from underground springs. In 1845, Brigham Young founded the Utah Mission in Grand Prairie, serving settlers here until his death in 1850. In 1865, when Texas became a state, Grand Prairie became its second incorporated town after Arlington Heights, Illinois. It quickly developed into a boomtown with many businesses opening up due to its strategic location on both sides of Interstate 10 (now I-10 East). In addition to its commerce and industry base, Grand Prairie also served as a cultural center for the region for many years thanks to its strong LDS community presence and music scene which helped make it one of the most popular tourist destinations for LDS missionaries throughout North America during that time frame. The city experienced some growth during World War II as defense plants were built nearby such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation’s plant located on Elmendorf Road just outside downtown; Boeing’s Plant #1 on Elmendorf Rd., now home to WestStar Aviation; and Republic Aircraft Factory #2 off White Oak Lake Dr., which manufactured radial-engined bombers for USAAF forces during World War II before it transitioned into jet aviation production under Republic Airlines banner in 1948. However, by 1960 Grand Prix Raceway had closed down leaving only two tracks remaining within Dallas County: Midway Park & Glendale Speedway on Midway Rd./Uptown Blvd., now home to Gilbert High School & Iserbeek Middle School; while Arlington Heights/Midway Park motorcycle track closed following complaints from residents about high speeds and lack of safety features on the track surface at that time period according to an article published by "DALLAS NEWS SERVICE" dated November 1st 1960 entitled "Track Closure Threatens Economic Destiny Of City". As suburban development increased along I-10 eastward from downtownDallas via Uptown Boulevard Pioneer Ave.; much attention turned towards developing or buying property adjacent or near Interstate 10 eastbound between DowntownDallas & Uptown Boulevard with potential business opportunities related thereto such as retail acres available immediately surrounding I-10 exit 417 leading southeast onto Slaughter Road then south onto Airport Freeway then northwest onto I-635 leading northeast out of town onto Grapevine Roads

Some highlights include: becoming one of Texas' largest cities with a population over 100,000; being named one of America's "Top 10" Cities for Diversity by National Geographic; being home to numerous Fortune 500 companies such as DowDuPont and ExxonMobil; becoming known for its high-quality education opportunities including seven universities and two dozen colleges and universities; hosting several professional sports teams including the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and MLB's Houston Astros; being host to several large international events such as the 2002 FIFA World Cup which saw Mexico win their first ever World Cup title; and experiencing impressive economic growth thanks in part to suburban development along Interstate 30 (the "Startup Corridor").
