Grand Prairie is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 191 at the 2010 census. Grand Prairie was founded in 1879 as one of the townships of Dallas County. It became a city on December 12, 1907. Grand Prairie is the county seat of Midland County. The area that now includes Grand Prairie was first settled by German and Irish immigrants in the early 1800s. A post office called "Granite" was established in 1879, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1907, when Dallas County was created, Granite became part of the new city. The population of Grand Prairie grew rapidly from its original 100 residents to 1,500 by 1920; then to 5,000 by 1930. By 1940 there were 10,000 people living in Grand Prairie proper and 20 miles (32 km) around it including 6 villages and an unincorporated community known as Mount Pleasant. In 1950 the population had reached 20,000 again and grew to 30,000 by 1970; then 41 thousand by 2000. As recently as 2006-2007 only 27% of grand prairie citizens owned their homes outright while 73% held mortgage or loanheld interests within their homes – still high enough proportions for a downtown business district with more than 4200 businesses to feel downtown presence without actually being insidegranite core; while 1/3rd street between Main and State Streets remains primarily residential despite over $1B investment cleaned up streets & sidewalks since Barscourts days

By 1941 Grand Prairie had reached its current size with over 50,000 residents and was considered one of the most diverse cities in Texas. The city added its own airport to its list of airports in 1961, becoming one of only two cities in Texas with an international airport as well as being home to Grand Prairie State University (GPSU).
