Grand Prairie is the fifth-largest city in Texas and one of its five largest cities by population. The city is also the county seat for Arlington County. The site of present day Grand Prairie was first inhabited by Native American people who called it "Moccasin Bend," meaning "place where moccasins are made." The first European to visit what is now Grand Prairie was French explorer Pierre Beausoleil on July 3, 1794 while exploring the Trinity River area between Fort Worth and Austin. He named the area after himself, Louis de la Salle, Sieur de Bellefontaine. In 1802, land grants were given to John Fenton and James Webb from Mexico City to develop this region as part of their Rancho del Rio Grande grant which included much of what nowGrand Prairie. In 1848, surveyors for the railroad company Central Pacific surveyed a route from Fort Worth through Arlington Heights (now Irving) to Dallas and then on to El Paso via Houston. This route became known as Railroad Row because many railroads crossed through or near that location at various points during its construction including Union Pacific Railway (1869), Western Union Telegraph Company (1870),and Southern Pacific Railway (1912). By 1900 there were over 100 businesses in downtown Grand Prairie with a population of over 500 residents. On October 15, 1901, an act providing for incorporation of Arlington County was passed by the Texas General Assembly with overwhelming support from both Republicans and Democrats representing all parts of the state. The new county had a population of 976 when it incorporated on February 3rd 1909 despite being just 7 miles wide at its greatest extent at that time due to infrastructure limitations caused by lack of money available for development within northeastern Travis County only east of downtown Dallas/Fort Worth combined with Ozark Mountains foothills extending into Baylor County beyond Dallas/Fort Worth limits making annexation impossible without special Acts passed by both houses which did not happen until 1914 and 1916 respectively In 1912 oil began flowing outleased from Eagle Ford shale sands under Roanoke Avenue in eastern Grand Prairie giving rise to name “Eagle Ford” Shale Area which still exists today but largely inactive due to non-compliance with production standards set forth by API seismic safety requirements . On January 20th 1951 an Act creating Dripping Springs Independent School District No 1 effective date thereof repealed all other school districts herein before mentioned thereby consolidating them into Dripping Springs ISD becoming one district form Lone Star State educational institutions having been authorized thereto duly constituted according to law

The city's history can be traced back to 1881 when brothers John and George Everitt founded Grand Prairie on land they had purchased from cattle ranchers near Fort Worth. They named their new settlement after their father-in-law, General James A. Hardin – who had died two years earlier in a horseback ride across Texas at the age of 72 – and his wife Sophia (née Post). The Everitts were among the first farmers to settle in what is now Midland County; by 1889 they had erected a warehouse and store on Main Street. In 1907, Grand Prairie became one of the five towns located within Dallas County when Dallas annexedMidland County. In 1915, during World War I, Grand Prairie hosted an airshow over Dowling Field Airport; more than 100 planes participated in this display which included USAF bombers and balloons dating back to RFC Orchard Field near Sacramento, California that day in April 1915. That same year saw the incorporation of First Presbyterian Church into Grand Premerite; it would later become known as Christ Lutheran Cathedral until its merger into Trinity United Methodist Church in 2001.
