The Grand Prairie Coast Guard Station was founded in 1923 as a small volunteer fire department. By the early 1970s, the coast guard had become a full-time service with its own station and officers. The first members of the Coast Guard station were Civilian Conservation Corps volunteers who helped erect a wooden platform to launch an electric buoy from a dock on the riverbank. In 1944, the first member of the United States Coast Guard Reserve was hired at Grand Prairie as part of efforts to expand services by both forces. The present coast guard station was built in 1978 using funds provided bythe state of Texas and donations from local citizens. The station is funded primarily through fees collected from boaters and fishermen. The main purpose of the Coast Guard is to provide law enforcement and security for our coastline, waterways, and marine resources. There are multiple missions conducted by the agency including Search and Rescue, response to spills or other emergencies involving public safety, pollution control, maritime security patrols, disaster relief efforts (including hurricanes Katrina and Rita), providing education about coastal navigation skills to children living near shorelines,and more. Additionally, each sector of society has their own specific needs which are addressed through special programs or operations that are conducted by the Coast Guard. For example, emergency medical services are provided 24/7 during major disasters such as earthquakes or wildfires; recreational fishing is popular among locals so there are often weekend fisheries contests held at various locations; while]DETROIT – home to one-third of all US shipping containersized cargo – provides protection against container borne drugs trafficking off Texas’ Gulf coast.] One important aspect that keeps Grand Prairie’s coastguardstation running smoothly is its workforce consisting predominately of civilians employed by contract rather than government employees eyes only for those duties related to protecting our environment and public safety. Contract employees come from many backgrounds including firefighters®, policemen®, EMS medics®, engineers®, social workers & human Resources directors® . This year, in addition to remembering all those who have passed away, it is also a time to give back to the Coast Guard community. Since its establishment in 1915, the Coast Guard has conducted annual Christmas Gift exchanges with other agencies throughout the United States. The exchanging process begins by sending out identifying information about each recipient such as their name, rank and date of birth. From there, recipients are allowed access to a wide variety of gifts which they can choose from according to their own personal interests and needs. This year’s exchange will take place on December 15th across United States Naval stations including Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia; Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida; and Helicopter Landing Field Kingman AZ among others. Participating agencies will provide opportunities for officers and enlisted members of the Coast Guard community to receive unique gifts that reflect their individual specialties or values.
