The Glenn Heights Naval Air Station is a former naval air station located in Glenn Heights, Texas. The site was first occupied by the United States Navy in 1917 as an American military airfield. In 1951, it became the Glenn Heights Naval Air Station and operated until 1977 when it was closed due to budget cuts. It reopened as an inactive naval air station in 1984. In 1992, the squadron at NAS Glen Heights detachment was redesignated 1st Fleet Fighter Squadron (1FTS). On 30 September 1996, the squadron took its current name of 1st Fleet Fighter Squadron - 5th Wing (1FTS-5W) after being activated from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma AZ on 15 October 1992. On 10 May 2002, USS "Hancock" collided with USS "Yorktown" off the coast of California damaging both ships and killing eleven sailors aboard Hancock. The accident caused a great deal of public outcry and led to changes to Navy ship design standards which made future collisions much less likely. Glenn Heights, Texas is a small town located in Webb County, Texas. The population was 1,852 at the 2000 census and 2,183 at the 2010 census. Glenn Heights is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by John Hogg and his family. The name "Glenn Heights" comes from a stream near the community that they named after their home state of Glennsylvania, Scotland. In 1907, local farmers started growing corn and wheat on land adjacent to where Glen Heights now stands. They also raised chickens and pigs on property nearby. In 1924, Mr. Hogg donated land to the city of Austin for development as an open-air shopping center called "Hogtown". The first stores opened there in 1925: First National Bank (nowJ S Purcell & Sons), Osmonds department store (later JCPenney), Ford dealership (later KFC), Texaco service station (now Shell petrol station), Overland Hotel (later Embassy Suites hotel) and several other businesses. In 1928, Glenn Heights incorporated as a village under the jurisdiction of Webb County Central Dispatch Radio Station District No 1 which included all of Webb County between Cedar Park to the north and Pflugerville to the south including Glenn Heights itself lying within CDR1's jurisdiction only. At that time no school or fire department services were available within Glenn Heights so citizens relied on carrying their own service with them when traveling outside village boundaries for emergency purposes such as car accidents or flooding etc.. This arrangement continued until 1959 when Webb County replaced Central Dispatch District 1 with its present incarnation - Travis Countywide Communications Authority - which provided all types of telecommunications services within Travis County free of charge to homeowners/residential residents without any type of special coupon or lease agreement required! From then on every household in Travis County had access to television sets/radio receivers! This gave new life both to village functions like elections held annually by Village President/Mayor select committees along with economic development initiatives such as sponsoring annual events like golf tournaments sponsored by various agricultural companies or fireworks displays during summertime Thanksgiving week!! Nowadays you can find many internet cafes / fast food restaurants inside village limits while grocery stores are limited mostly to fresh produce selection but still carry some essentials like milk & cheese etc... . After World War II many veterans returned home from overseas military engagements bringing with them new technologies such as radios and television sets which helped change how people lived their lives forever changing not just this small town but suburbs too What we see today began almost in earnest here back then THANKS TO RADIO AND TV watching friends & family over cups OF COFFEE
