Glenn Heights is a small town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The name is derived from the Glenn family of pioneers who settled there in 1845. The town was incorporated on February 14, 1909. It was named for General James A. Glenn, who commanded American forces during World War I and II. The first settlers were the Gilmore brothers, who arrived in 1845 from Kentucky and founded a cabin near present-day Glen Rose. In 1846, John Gilmore set up shop next door to his brother’s cabin and began growing crops and raising livestock. By 1850, the Gilmores had additions to their farmstead – a house and six barns. In 1856, Gideon Garland bought land adjacent to the Gilmore farmstead and began building a log cabin which became known as Glen Heights Castle. He also startedraising cattle and hogs on his new property. In 1889, local citizens voted to incorporate as a town under the name of "Glen Heights". The incorporation was ratified by the state legislature on February 14th of that year. At that time, it consisted of just 10 residents – all farmers – with only one store located in downtown Glen Heights proper。 During World War I (1914-18), Glen Heights served as headquarters for American forces stationed in Bastrop County: General James A. Glenn lived here while leading units into battle.. Additionally, many important figures such as Governor Wallace attended services at Glen Heights Church during this time period... After the war ended in 1918*, Glen Heights continued to grow rapidly with new businesses opening up throughout downtown: Jiffy Lube garage opened in 1925; Kwik-E-Mart store opened in 1928; First National Bank opened in 1931; Alice Mae Furniture Store opened in 1934; Coca Cola Bottling Company open its doors on January 1st 1935.; finally* Valvoline Tire & Rubber Co., Incorporated opened its doors on November 15th 1936.* These businesses brought much prosperity to Glashearts residents over the years(*). * Note: Some older businesses have closed down or been moved out of town since then - most notably First National Bank which still stands today but has changed ownership several times*.
