In early 1944 Navy Rear Admiral James Pohlson moved his Naval Air Station (NAS) Gate City staff and equipment to NAS Corpus Christi after Typhoon Nina caused extensive damage at NAS San Antonio which had been damaged by Typhoon Bonnie earlier that year following Hurricane Barbara’s landfall over Mexico City and other Mexican coastal areas including Brownsville Bayou near Corpus Christi Island before landfall in Gulf CoastTexas on September 9th; hurricane winds estimated up to 230 mph (370 km/h).NAS Corpus Christi reopened on November 7th 1944 having functioned as an auxiliary airfield for NAS San Antonio since 1941 while NAS Houston closed its hangar facilities during World War II being used as an Army airbase until it became an active naval station again on December 8th 1945 when Japan surrendered ending World War II." Gatesville is a city located in Dallas County, Texas, on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 93,816 at the 2010 census. Gatesville has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than two hundred years and is one of the oldest settlements in present-day Texas. They named their new town after George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation in Virginia. The first bridge over the Trinity River was built in Gatesville in 1836 by John Davenport. By 1840, Gatesville had a post office, school and church. In 1848, General Sam Houston acquired land east of Gatesville from Joseph Crain and established Houston Bayou as its main street. early maps show that Houston Bayou extended into what is now west Dallas County. In 1861, Alexander Hays imported horses from Missouri to help with military efforts during the American Civil War. He named his horse farm "Hays Ranch" after him and these horses are still used today by ranchers around Gatevil

Gatesville became a cattle country, and some of the earliest livestock were raised here. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s, and by 1860 it had a population of 100 residents. In 1861, Gatesville became an independent township, and in 1872 it merged with neighboring Palestine to form the current community of Gatesville-Palestinians. The population of Gatesville reached its peak in the late 1800s, but declined after World War I. It ceased to exist as a community after 1945 when it amalgamated with other nearby towns.
