Gatesville is a town in Kleberg County, Texas, United States. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. Gatesville was founded by John Gates and his wife Martha on November 25, 1872. The first post office in Gatesville was established in 1875. During World War II, Gatesville served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force. It also played a role in the Battle of Bataan and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Gatesville is located at (29.645993, -95.722256). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Gatesville has a humid subtropical climate with significant monthly rainfall totals from May through October averaging . The town was named after John GATES who built the first store there in 1872 and later became its first Postmaster General. When World War II began, Gatesville became an airfield for Ninth Air Force which used it until 1945 when it came into use by the US Army as part of Operation Coronet which aimed to capture Manila Bay
