It was founded by John Gates and his wife Rebecca in 1836 as a log fort named for their relative Samuel Gates. In 1856, Gatesville became a community under the jurisdiction of Fort Worth. The city's first post office opened in 1840 and closed in 1859 due to lack of applicants. The first mayor of Gatesville was James Fenton from 1865 to 1870. In 1886, Wm Burchill built a cotton gin and mill on the banks of Red River near present-day Gate City Hall. However, the mill failed within two years and Burchill sold it to Jno Hoyle in 1888 for $3,000 (). Hoyle renamed it the Hoyle Cotton Gin & Mill Company and continued operations until 1935 when it merged with other textile companies to form Texaco Incorporated (now ExxonMobil). In 1916, John Sayers founded Sayers Lumber Co., which developed into one of Texas' leading lumber companies. Gatesville experienced several waves of migration during its history: German farmers settled here in 1865; Irish immigrants arrived following World War I; African Americans moved here during desegregation; and Poles from Western Europe began moving into the area beginning in the early 1960s. Today there are few non-native residents because most people who were born or raised here have returned home or are living elsewhere within Texas or nationally. In 1936, John Sayers purchased land east of Gate City Hall that would become what is now known as Sayers Park (). He used this land to build an experimental farm that he called "The Gables". The farm functioned briefly before being shut down due to low yields. However,Gate City boosters managed to keep interest alive by creating trails that lead visitors around The Gables property today (the pathway runs along State Highway 377).Gate City boosters also managed to get state legislation passed allowing them use of part of gate city hall for events such as country dances (an event still held annually at Gate City Hall today) Additionally some gates off State Highway 377 still remain open as tourist attractions which provide revenue for local businesses who manage these properties .Today many descendants live throughoutt TX yearly visiting Gateway cities like Dallas , Houston etc
