Gatesville is a small town in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is part of the Tyler–Marshall Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gatesville was founded in 1881 by J.D. Whitney and Wm. Averill Gates. The first post office opened in 1886 and the population grew to 4,000 by 1910. Gatesville was named after John Denny Gates, who had homesteaded there in 1881. The town's history dates back to 1881 when J.D. Whitney and Wm Averill Gates settled down on what is now known as East Main Street in what is now Gate City Park (now Gate City Elementary School). They were the first people to build a sawmill hereabouts and later organized a Methodist Episcopal Church which functioned until 1909 when it burned down due to an electrical fire that destroyed much of downtown Gatesville %. In 1894 David Sayers bought some land east of Gate City for $10 per acre from Whitney and soon started building homes thereon including two whitewashed frame houses which still stand today on Main Street - one facing south and the other facing north 。 In 1896 he also built a grist mill which served as the nucleus of current Gateway Grist Mill complex that continues operations today with over 60 employees . There were only six families living inGate City at its peak but within 10 years they had increased to 20+. By 1910 there were 400 residents hereabouts with businesses ranging from blacksmiths to groceries 、 pet shops and more 。 One resident recalled: "There wasn't any mail service then so you either got your mail through somebody else or you made your own way." In 1950, Gatesville absorbed neighboring towns of Clearwater and Willacy and became one municipality with a population of approximately 5,000 people. The city has since grown to encompass over 10 square miles and has seen significant growth in its economy and population since becoming a municipality. The history ofGateway begins with J D Gates who founded it back in 1887 as "Gatesville". At that time it was just a small village on the banks of the Neches River near present day downtown Houston . It quickly grew into an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and location flanked by two major rivers -the Neches River & Buffalo Bayou-. AsGateway began expanding rapidly they hired more hands so that everyone could work on what were then large farmssteads! By 1910 there were over 100 residents living in "Gatesvillencity"and business had really started booming with companies like Wacoal(now Abbott Laboratories), Bechtel(now Bechtel Corporation), Gulf Oil(later ExxonMobil) coming through town!. With such big businesses came bigger families who would live next door or across country for their various jobs! One such family was The GentryCompany who lived next door to Mr J D gates until he passed away in 1951 however their legacy lives on through their company today! They continue making quality farm equipment products as well as building high-end homes! Another prominent resident during this time was Mrs Alice Rankin who ran her own grocery store called "The Alice Rankin Store" right across from where Gateways Custom Homebuilders now stands! This period also marked some pretty significant moments for Gateway when they won't only became municipally recognized but also got awarded key contracts from both state governments (Brazoria county government& Harris county government)!!!!!! All these accomplishments madeGateway one local powerhouse at this point!!! However things took a turn for the worse when World War II started; gatesVILLE went into lockdown mode!!! Many residents had to leave either because they were drafted or because they volunteered firefighter services!!! After Pearl Harbor happened many people decided not to return home because war was goingons!! ( even though gatesVILLE technically returned back online after that!) Unfortunately things didn't get better from hereon out as gateVILLE saw continued decline culminating in 1984 when it lost its municipal status!!!! In recent yearsGateway has seen some resurgence with some new development being approved including a new high school & plans for another Walmart !! Despite all these challenges Gateway still manages to keep growing & thriving !!!!!!!!!!!!!
