Gatesville Marine Museum is one of the oldest maritime museums in Texas. It opened its doors in 1917 and has been located at the old Gatesville Naval Shipyard on FM 929 since that time. The museum's collections include artifacts from throughout Texas' history, as well as naval vessels from both before and after World War I.
Gatesville is a small town in Hardin County, Texas, United States. It is located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Gatesville was James Hogg, who arrived in 1851. By 1860, Gatesville had a post office and two stores. In 1865, John Gates founded the Town of Gatesville with 9 other settlers. The town growth accelerated due to its location on the railroad and its access to irrigation water from nearby Cedar Creek. The town has since grown to include three churches (Anglican, Methodist and Baptist), a grocery store/cafeteria/barber shop, a bowling alley and numerous businesses including Ford's Garage and Pappy's BBQ restaurant. In 1990, Gatesville established itself as an agricultural center with corn production accounting for most of the town's income. Many of the more recent businesses have been linked to technology or biotechnology industries such as Googleplex which occupies land adjacent to Gateways High School; Monsanto Corporation which operates several research facilities within walking distance ofGateways; Dow Chemical Company whose main campus is located just outside of town; and BASF AG which operates several plants within driving distance of Gatesville proper

Gatesville was founded in 1876 by J.W. Gates and his wife, Mary Jane. The town was named after John Wesley Gates, a local farmer and landowner. The Gases were the first white men to settle in Gatesville, and they opened a store and post office there in 1877. In 1880, the Gases became the first black family to live in Gatesville when their son George moved from Mobile to take up farming there. Over time, Gatesville grew increasingly prosperous as its residents developed successful businesses within the local community. By 1925, Gatesville had become one of the largest cotton towns in Texas with a population of over 1,000 people. Its commercial success allowed it to expand its services beyond just agricultural production and marketing; for instance, during this time it began developing several civic amenities such as a library and swimming pool. In 1960, J.W.'s eldest son Jerald took over running the business at Gate'sville; he would continue operation until his death in 2002. Under Jerald's leadership, Gate'sville continued expanding into new markets both domestically and abroad; during his tenure it increased its sales by more than 100%. In 1992, Gate'sville merged with another cotton town called Carthage to form what is now known as Carthage-Gatesville-Carthage (CG) Industries Incorporated (CGI). CGI has since grown into one of Texas' leading manufacturing companies with operations throughout the state including Gatesville itself as well as several strategic outposts across Texas' rural countryside

Lee after he became Confederate general during the American Civil War. After the war, Gatesville continued to grow and become a popular agricultural center with sawmills, corn cribs, and other businesses dotting its landscape. By 1920, Gatesville had a population of over 1,500 residents and boasted a variety of businesses including several stores and a movie theater. The town experienced steady growth until the1980s when it began to decline as various factors such as joblessness and inflation hit hard. However, since 2000 gate village has begun to rebound with new development and is now one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas
