The town's cultural attractions include the Gatesville Municipal Building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; a museum devoted to African American history; and a number of historic homes. The Gatesville area was first populated by Native Americans who hunted and collected game in the area now known as Gatesville. In 1847, John Gates came across some land that he thought would be perfect for his new settlement. He named the land Gatesville after his brother-in-law Samuel Gentry Jr., who had purchased the land from an Indian chief. The first settlers arrived in October of 1847, and soon began building their homes. By summer of 1848, several businesses were up and running including a saddlery shop, post office, hotel/taverns (the first such establishment in east Texas), blacksmith shop/forge (the first such business in Texas), grocery store/butchery (the first such business in eastTexas), wagon wheel factory (the first such business in southeast Texas), school (the first public school in south Texas), patchouli oil works (the firstsuch business west of Mexico City),and two churches: First Baptist Church—founded January 9th1851—and Second Baptist Church—founded February 14th1853). In 1850, East Texans voted to incorporation as a town under the name "Gatesville." The following year saw heavy investment intoGatevinee Townships by local investors totaling $5200 with hopes of turning it into an agricultural powerhouse like those found near Austin or Houston. However within 2 years only 12%of gatevinees acres had been leased out for farming while 3/4of all jobs were Manufacturing or Service occupationsXXXXXX%. After much debate among residents over whether to continue agricultural endeavors or focus on manufacturing this decision was made not to annex neighboring towns but rather merge with them into what would become Midland County After much deliberation it was decided that no more than 10%of Gatevinees population should reside within its borders so limits were placed on white farmers only leasing out 1/3Of Gatevines rural acres between 1870 &1920XXXXXXX". This restriction however did nothing to halt subdivision by whites for economic reasons led largely by entrepreneur James Wickersham whose farm grew from 6 acres leased out in 1920 to over 100acres todayXXXXXXX". From 1924 onwards until 1959 when state law changed deed restrictions prevented gatesvilers from subdividing beyond their house boundaries again development increased significantly although still at levels below annexation rates leading many people to believe that gatesvillers could never really achieve parity with other towns due primarily to restrictive deed laws

The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to its location on the Texas Creek near the confluence of the Trinity River and the Brazos River. In 1916, Gatesville was named one of "America's Hundred Towns" by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Eugene O'Neill.
