Gatesville is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,972 at the 2010 census. Gatesville was founded in 1881 by George W. Gates and his family. It became a municipality in 1907. The original post office was renamed Gatesville on December 8, 1907. The city of Gatesville is located within the Town of Gatesville which was organized on February 15, 1896 with a population of just six people. When the City of Gatesville seceded from Midland County on May 24, 1903 it had a population of 27 people and five businesses! On July 1st 1916 the first school opened up in what would become known as the "Old School House". At that time there were only three pupils and one teacher! In 1924 when oil started to be drilled near the town Limits it began to boom and soon there were several businesses opening up including a grocery store/telephone service junction In 1951 an express bus service between Midland and Dallas called "The Gator" started operation; this led to more people coming into town for shopping reasons rather than driving distances (the lack of traffic then). By 1964 there were over 100 businesses operating in town including gas stations, convenience stores, hospitals and other services such as doctor's visits etc.; this made downtown quite busy with all sorts of activities taking place throughout each day! The Old School House closed its doors for good in 1987 but has been reopened as Museum Of History & Industry ever since! Today downtown still contains many business units with parking available right next to them making it easy for visitors to get around without having to leave their business premises!
