Gatesville is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. Gatesville is located in McLennan County on the eastern edge of Houston metropolitan area. The first settlers arrived in 1836 when John Wartime Gates and his family moved from Illinois to what is now Gatesville after losing their home in a battle with Indians. They were followed by another group of pioneers in 1837, led by James Hogg and William Goodnight. By 1840, there were ten families living in Gatesville; all but one had been born within a few miles of each other on the Brazos River near present-day downtown Houston. In 1841, Gatesville land was sold to James Polk for $5,000 (). Polk donated 5 acres (2 hectares) to the Ross family who founded Post Oak Village on that site in 1865 (). In 1870, post office officials renamed Gatesville "Houston" after President Ulysses S. Grant's wife, Lucy Lawless Houston (1847-1920). During World War II, Gatesville served as an airfield for auxiliary units of Coastal Command RAF/No 617 Squadron RNAS () which flew Lockheed P-38 Lightnings and Gloster Meteor fighters against Japanese forces during Operation Coronet (), also known as 'Valkyrie'. The town was briefly occupied by Japanese forces during their occupation of nearby Angleton Field (); however no action took place within its boundaries due to lack of suitable landing areas for Allied planes! In 1948, Gateways grocery store opened its doors after being started by Gertrude McFarlane (), widow of local rancher Wirt McFarlane (). Two years later McFarlane's grandson Charles Ewing bought the store and continued operation until it closed its doors on October 15th 1960 (). Gatesville is a town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. Gatesville was founded in 1881 by John C. Gates and his family. The town name comes from General George B. McClellan's campaign against Mexican forces in 1846. In 1907, Gatesville became the county seat of Wise County after being chosen by commissioners from surrounding towns. The first settlers were John C. Gates and his wife Elizabeth (née Smith). They established a small farm on what is now Utopia Road east of present-day Gatesville and named it Northgate after their home state of New York City. They also built the first school in Gatesville, which opened its doors to students on December 4, 1881. In 1887, General James Polk designated East Gate as the new county seat because it had more business opportunities than West Gate located near Austin. At this time, only white people lived in Gatesville while most of the population was Native American Indian or Mexican stock who had ceded land to Texan settlers during the previous years of Mexico's rule over Texas including parts of present-day Wise County and Baylor County south of Austin...A committee consisting of Mr J G Whitehead (owner & operator) W M Cain & myself surveyed land for a proposed railroad between Georgetown and San Antonio but due to financial difficulties our proposal failed to come through...In 1899 we erected a courthouse on Main Street opposite our current post office building which still stands today... Throughout these early days businesses were conducted primarily through barter or trade with other nearby communities such as Georgetown and San Antonio where goods could be bought or sold.. On October 2nd 1901 local citizens voted 3-2 to form a school board with Mrs A H Webb serving as chairwoman..Mrs Webb soon found herself overwhelmed with duties within the newly formed school board so she resigned effective November 15th 1902 followed by Mrs D L Sowell who served until her death in 1903...Mrs Webb is buried at Oakwood Cemetery next to her husband John C Gates Sr where an extensive gravesite can be seen including several cannons that once stood outside gatesille’s original log cabin church built circa 1850AD
