The Gatesville Coast Guard Station was created on July 1, 1915. The station was located at the mouth of the Brazos River. It was manned by five men and two women. On December 12, 1925, it became a coast guard station with a full-time male staff of twelve officers and fifty-six enlisted men. In 1940, the Coast Guard Station had an additional four officers and seventy-eight enlisted men when it became a duty lighthouse service with keeper status. In 1957, the lighthouse service was discontinued and the Coast Guard Station reverted to duties as a coast guard station. In 1970, the Gatesville Coast Guard Station acquired an old navy destroyer named "Hercules" which served as its first vessel for icebreaking services in Bexar County. The ship stopped at the Gatesville Coast Guard Station nineteen times for operations including six trips to Corpus Christi Bay during winter months. On October 15, 1979, Gate City native Glenn Dyer became Keeper of Memorial Lighthouse after serving as acting keeper from January 16 through May 18 that year while Assistant Lightkeeper Bob Haney filled in for John Witherspoon who due to health reasons could not continue his position permanently. On November 6th Glenn Dyer passed away after a long illness at age eighty-six years old.
Gatesville, Texas is a small town located in Grayson County, Texas. The population was 599 at the 2000 census. Gatesville is home to two churches and a number of businesses. The town was founded in 1881 by John A. Gates and his brother William B. Gates. It grew rapidly during the 1930s and 1940s as oil production increased in the area. Today, Gatesville retains many of its traditional values such as independent families, farmers markets, and small-town communities.

Gatesville is a small town in Gates County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo metropolitan area.Gateville was founded in 1879 by John A. Gates and his family as a trading post on the Red River. In 1881, Gatesville became an incorporated community with a school and a hotel. By 1907, Gatesville had become an agricultural center with herds of cows and horses from central Texas; it also produced cotton, peanuts, sugar beets, wheat, corn and other vegetables for local markets. In 1930, Gatesville became the site of the first state-of-the-art irrigation system in Texas when it was donated to the county by Jock Hardin Sr., owner of Hardin Rancho Llano cattle ranch near present day Amarillo. The project cost $1 million and began construction in 1932 by George Hagerty & Company under contract with counties throughout Texas. The original design called for 5 miles (8 km) of canalized watercourse to supply 10 townships with 360 acre feet (30 m3) per day of water while providing flood control; however only 3 miles (4 km) were built before World War II stopped construction due to budgetary constraints within state government at that time. The community has experienced several phases over its history: growth during the 1920s when more than 100 people worked at two businesses; decline during World War II when much agricultural production moved away to nearer urban centers; resurgence following the return of agriculture after prohibition ended in1992; and most recently continuing growth through new housing developments since 2000 which have brought new life to this rural town located about 15 minutes west of Amarillo on US Highway 281/287
Gatesville was founded in 1853 by Major George Washington Gates and his wife, Meta. The town was named after General John Byers, who led the Texas Rangers during the Mexican-American War. Gatesville became a post office in 1854, and a small community developed around it. In 1876, Gatesville incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its natural resources and growing population. However, from the 1910s through the 1960s, Gatesville's economy struggled as rural residents left for more jobs in Houston or Dallas. Today, Gatesville is home to a small but vibrant community of retirees and local businesses.
