Garland, Texas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Garland has been home to a variety of cultures and people since its incorporation as a town on April 16, 1872. The early settlers were Texans from east Texas who arrived in what is now Garland during the Creek Indian War of 1836-1837. They were joined by Anglo-American settlers who came from North Carolina in the 1840s and 1850s looking for land to homestead. In 1865, whenDallas County was created from parts of Collin and Kaufman counties, Garland was included within that county. The first store in Garland opened on Main Street on July 14, 1872. A post office was established at Garland on December 3, 1872. At first it served only residents of Dallas County; later it became an overnight mail carrier for all Dallas County and adjacent counties. By 1886 there were eighteen businesses in downtown Garland with a total population of 2,500 residents including ninety-six banks and thirty-six grocery stores As suburbanization began to take hold throughout North TX during the late 1800s & early 1900s many people left downtown Garner for new neighborhoods near IHOP or other fast food restaurants—- principally White Oaks Ranch southwest OF downtown (now Midtown) along Elmwood Avenue—due to lack of affordable housing (still an issue today). This exodus led to development along Elmwood Avenue which quickly replaced Downtown as the center of business activity and culture in Garner starting around 1915 until outgrowing that locale about 20 years ago 🤔
