Garland, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census and is expected to rise to 2,089 by 2030. Garland is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The early History of Garland Garland was founded on October 7, 1872 by J.W. Garland and his brother John Hargrave as a ranching community on what is now known as Garland Rancho Seco in El Paso County, Texas (now part of Dallas). In 1893, J.W.'s son William Mears bought the original land from Colonel James Fenton for $1,500 dollars which he used for grazing and farming purposes until 1901 when he sold it to George Sibley for $4,000 dollars which became the nucleus around which the city of Garland formed in 1902. The first store opened in 1903 and soon there were several other businesses open including a schoolhouse and post office. On December 12th 1904 Captain Ayer Ewing donated two acres east of downtown to be developed into an important business district called Ewing Plaza with office buildings, restaurants and a movie theater being among its first developments

Garland County, Texas was formed on November 1, 1874 from portions of Dallas County. It is named after Garland Plantation, which was located in what is now Arlington County. The county seat and largest city is Arlington. The population of the county was estimated to be over 220,000 as of 2010. Garland County has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when it became part of the Republic of Texas. At that time, it included much of what is now eastern Dallas County as well as parts of western Baylor and Kaufman counties. The first settler in Garland County was James Ewing who built a cabin on the San Jacinto River in 1836. In 1840, Wm Hargrave moved his family from Easton Township in Berks County to what is now east Garland and began trading with Native Americans. By 1845, some settlers had arrived including Reuben Woodruff and his wife Sarah Cline Woodruff who donated land for a church and school at what would later become Arlington Heights Cemetery. Johnnie Ray’s ranch became the first stagecoach stop in Dallas COUNTY on March 25th, 1865 when he made camp at Rossville Station near present-day Preston Hollow Road before continuing on toDallas/Fort Worth Landing Today’s Texas State Highway 75 ran through this area then called “Rossville Settlement” near present day Harmon Avenue about one mile east of today’s route 4191 (Harmon Boulevard) southeast of downtown Arlington metropolis
Garland, Texas was named for General James Garland, who 255 years ago fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1828, the town of Garland was founded by Capt. Austin Chamberlain and 100 settlers. The town gradually grew as a commercial center, and in 1859 it became the county seat of Griffin County. In 1907, the city of Garland was established on the east side of the county seat and rapidly grew into one of its largest cities. The city is now home to more than 30,000 residents and is a major cultural and economic center within Texas.
