Galveston, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas and the county seat of Galveston County. The population was 1,635 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf Coast of Texas near Corpus Christi. The first coffee shops opened in Galveston in 1887 and by 1905 there were ten. By 1912 there were twenty-one coffee shops and two cafés. In 1915, the first Dutch café opened in Galveston with six tables inside and twelve outside. Coffee became popularized as a tourist attraction after American soldiers stationed in World War I brought back cups of Java from Europe to drink at their bases across the US. Coffee began to be sold commercially in 1919 when Harry Peake founded The Coffee House Tavern on present day Houston Street adjacent to what is now State Park Station (now part of NRG Park). As coffeehouses became more popular, they started serving different types of food such as sandwiches, salads, pizzas and pastas along with coffee which increased profits for these businesses. In 1937 The Coffee House Tavern merged with another business called The Cafe & Bakery which had been open since 1924 and served breakfast until 5pm everyday except Sundays when it offered lunchtime service only. At this point most cafes closed down due to competition from fast food restaurants but one cafe did not fold: The Coffee Shop on Bogue Bayou remained open until 1980s serving French toast, eggs benedict and pancakes until it closed its doors again because its landlord could no longer afford to keep up with damage done by Hurricane Ike during that decade

In 1907, J R Taylor bought Andrews' Grocery and moved it to 410 Fifth Avenue where it continued to serve refreshments until 1961 when it closed its doors for good. The first Starbucks location opened on April 14th, 1997 in downtown Galveston with two locations open at First and Third Streets before expanding to South Dallas by 2003 with three stores total across six counties including Arlington County (Dallas).
