The Galveston National Guard was first organized on July 1, 1892 as a unit of the Texas Militia. The Galveston National Guard was composed of volunteer militia units from throughout the state. On November 15, 1912, the Galveston National Guard became an independent military organization and its commander became Lieutenant Colonel John W. Schofield. The garrison at Galveston Island served as a training ground for Texan volunteers in preparation for World War I. In 1917, the Texas Legislature designated the island as a military base for use by the national guard in case of war with Mexico and on other occasions when needed by the state government. By 1920, there were over 200 military personnel stationed at Galveston Island and it also functioned as a naval air station during World War II. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized the creation of an infantry regiment, which would serve as part of United States Army forces deployed to Korea under Commanders General George C Marshall and Robert E Lee. On October 14, 1955, Headquarters Company (First Battalion) Reuben J. Fields Infantry Regiment arrived at Santa Fe Depot with their horses and equipment to take up permanent quarters within Fort Worth Army Air Base east of town after being transported by truck from Waco Army Air Field north of town on September 9th On October 16th they boarded planes provided by Fort Worth AAF to fly to Seoul where they would be attached to 7th Brigade/5th Division United Nations Forces
