The Marine Corps was created in 1875 when the United States of America acquired the Philippines from Spain. The Marines were first sent to Galveston, Texas in 1898 to help quell a Mexican-American Rebellion. The Marines fought and died in that conflict, and their legacy is still perpetuated today. Since World War II, Galveston has been the home of the Marine Barracks and Marine Support Facilities. These facilities provide housing, dining, and recreational opportunities for Marines stationed throughout the world. Galveston also serves as a primary embarkation point for Marines deployments to Operation Neptune’s Spear (Korean War), Operation Desert Storm (Iraq War), and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). Galveston, Texas is a coastal city located in the Houston metropolitan area on the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2010 census, Galveston had a population of 316,904. The name "Galveston" was given to it by Captain John Fenton in 1836 as a result of its location at the mouth of Galveston Bay. It was founded on November 6, 1836 by Commodore John D. Sloat and other United States Naval officers in response to reports that the Spanish were shipping goods from Cuba through the Port of Houston without paying duties. The first set of steamboats reached Galveston on July 4, 1840. The local Judge Amos Brown built one such steamer called "Brown's Ferry". This ferry allowed passengers and cargo to cross over to shore for loading or unloading at various points along the bayou (currently named after Brown). By 1845, Galveston had become an important seaport providing goods and passengers with access to slavery-based transportation into and out of Louisiana via riverboat travel. In addition, cotton plantations dottinggalveston bayou grew rich from slave trade profits while many wealthy men settled there in hopes of becoming post-Depression millionaires like Sam Houston. In 1865 following Confederate General Robert Ewell's attempt to conquer Austin and take control of Texas' capital City, Austin surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Palo Alto which effectively ended Reconstruction throughout much southern America including Texas until World War II when African Americans regained their rights under the new Jim Crow laws passed in Arkansas but not yet implemented nationally throughout much Southern California where Galveston now stands

Today, Galveston is an international tourist destination with properties such as Marina Bayou (the largest body of water on Texas) serving as convenient beachfront venues for swimming, windsurfing, boating, fishing., playing golf etc..
