Galveston is a city located in Galveston County, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 59,895 at the 2010 census. It is C-Class city with A+ public schools and an airport with scheduled passenger service. The name "Galveston" comes from the Spanish word "gallardo," meaning thief or pilferer. As early as 1827, a band of pirates known as the Texas Rangers were operating out of Galveston and other ports along the Gulf of Mexico. The first permanent settler in Galveston was Nicolas de Valdez who landed on September 12, 1836, founding what would become Galveston County. Valdez named his new town after himself and his friend Captain James Fenton of HMS Bounty fame who had plundered Spanish treasure ships off Puerto Rico in 1815. The port at Galveston became one of the most important commercial centers in Texas during its early years and by 1860 it had become home to over 30 manufacturing plants and 300 businesses associated with shipbuilding and marine commerce. The opening of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad in1863 created new opportunities for trade and transportation; this also led to increased development around the harbor including housing estates that sprang up around mile marker 23 (now Uptown). By 1865 all but two percent of Texans lived within 10 miles (16 km) of Houston while less than 1% lived within 2 miles (3 km) of Galveston proper. During World War II there was significant military activity at various Naval Base sites throughout southeastern Texas; however, naval aviation activity ended at Galveston about 1945 when last jet aircraft were removed from Navy base island island on November 6th 1945 In recent years much redevelopment has taken place around downtown; many high-end apartments have been built since 2005 alone putting fresh life back into this once struggling section of town which has lost much business to outlying areas such as Katy
