Galena Park is a small city in the Lone Star State of Texas, located about 25 miles east of Dallas. The population was 24,714 at the 2010 census. Galena Park is adjacent to Arlington County and has a rich history dating back to 1835. Galena Park was founded in 1835 by Andrew Cunningham, an Englishman who had come to Texas as part of the first British settlement. Cunningham named his new settlement after the ancient Greek city of Agrigentum, which he had seen on his travels. In 1865, Galena Park became part of Richardson County when it was organized from parts of Kaufman and Hudspeth counties. In 1912, Galena Park incorporated as a city under the name of Dallas. The current name was given to it by City Manager Harry Pemberton in honor of Queen Victoria's visit to Dallas in 1911. The city has experienced several economic expansions over its history; its largestichita (late 19th century) and commercial center were replaced by modern development during the 20th century. Galena Park is a town in Galveston County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The first white person to live in what is now Galveston County was James Ewing, who arrived on a ship from Ireland in 1824. He built the first post office there in 1825 and named it after his native Galway City in Ireland. In 1829, two brothers founded the Brazos Valley Railroad to connect Galveston with Dallas and Houston. In 1835, John Sayers donated land for a public school that became Baylor University. Brazos Valley Railroad main line extended to Galveston by 1840. In 1845, George Waddell founded Galena Park as an agricultural township with a store and one acre (0.40 km2) of land per settler. It grew rapidly because of its location at the mouth of the Buffalo Bayou and access to irrigation water from Lake Conroe and other sources. In 1850, Waddell sold some of his land to trustees who established Baylor University there; it would become one of America's largest universities with over 50 miles (80 km) of campus by 1870 In 1862-1863 Confederate forces burned much of downtown GALENA PARK during their unsuccessful attempt to capture Fort Sam Houston southeast of town limits while Union forces were attacking Fort Whitney northwest of town limits . Mayor Jules Aiken reported this event in an official report which can be found online: "On Saturday evening last [April 10], while our men were skirmishing about West End Avenue near Main Street Bridge over Buffalo Bayou...about 12 shots were fired from Federal rifles across White Oak Creek towards our Barracks buildings here where we are situated...the house belonging to Colonel Fenton being among these buildings...It appeared that arms had been planted behind low bushes near by by several rifles could be seen lying around". This event remainsGalveston's most notorious tragedy . After the battle Union troops burned down all but a frame or two outbuilding useable for college classes before moving on -presumably not caring about damage done . Many prominent Texans were born or lived here including Sam Houston, John Foust and Stephen Austin. The city also played an important role in both World Wars as a base for military operations and as a manufacturing center for munitions production.
