It was once part of the independent City of Austin before annexation by Austin in 2013. The first European settler in what is now Gainesville was John Hudspeth who arrived there in 1836. Hudspeth's land grant included 640 acres (241 hectares) to serve as the town site. In 1839, two brothers named Edward Hogg and James Sitton purchased three-quarters of Hudspeth's land grant for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest on each year's purchase price. They named their new town "Gainesville" after General George Travis' victory at San Jacinto which ended Mexican claims to Texas. In 1865, when Dallas became an Independent City it annexed Gainesville and portions of Round Rock and Plano under its jurisdiction. The incorporation ordinance for Gainesville read: "That this city be erected upon an excellent site situate within easy walking distance from all important points in the county seat of Collin." Gainesville, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Gainesville was established in 1872 as a post office and settlement on the banks of the Brazos River. It became an agricultural center with cotton plantations and cattle ranching until World War II when it transitioned to aluminum production and now employs more than 50% of its workforce in manufacturing. The first Europeans to visit Gainesville were soldiers of the Mexican army who traveled through Hidalgo County during their annual campaign against Texan independence fighters in 1836-37. They named the river "Brazos" after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces had destroyed all but one of Mexico's twelve forts along that stretch of border south of San Antonio de Bexar (now Austin). In 1872, James Fenton opened a store at what is now corner Main Street and East Elm Streets in Gainesville. In 1899, his son-in-law Wm. Eason founded The American Tobacco Company here with land he acquired from John Waddell on which he built what would become Gainesville's first schoolhouse (1899). The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the crossroads of several railroads serving both Dallas and Houston; also its location near major water resources including Brazos River and White Sands Lake made it attractive for industrial development. In 1907, local civic groups formed the village corporation to manage growth within the limits set by village trustees appointed by county commissioners. The incorporation led to increased traffic congestion around downtown Gainesville because goods brought into or exported from town had to be unloaded at two railroad terminals located just east of town center: US 75 northbound and I-10 southbound exit 20A/21A (today US 281/281W)
