The 3rd Texas National Guard Unit was also activated in 1916 and served as artillery regiment until 1922. The 4th Texas National Guard Unit was activated on May 15, 1923 and it acted as an infantry brigade based in Amarillo until 1936 when it ceased operations due to World War II. On October 14, 1942, the 5thTexas National Guard Unitwas activated at Gainesville and it became part of World War II military forces under United States Army Major General George Custer command. It operated as a rifle battalion until 1945 when it became a tank battalion under Lieutenant Colonel John Hines command. In 1951, the 6thTexas National GuardUnitwas activated at Gainesville and its functions changed from being an infantry brigade to becoming an armored regiment under United States Air Force Brigadier General Robert Eberhardt command. From 1957 through 1974, this unit acted as Headquarters Battery for Aerospace Defense Command's Strategic Air Command Range at Peterson AFB southeast of Houston while providing security services within that airspace during peak hours (10 p.m.-6 a.m.). On July 1, 1976, Headquarters Battery transferred its assets to Randolph AFB northwest of Dallas where it remains today as 174th Missile Wing/14th Missile Wing (Aerial) squadron commander with responsibility for all USAF missile weapons programs located within or adjacent thereto including long range conventional airbases such as Whiteman AFB near Memphis Tennessee; Offutt AFB NE; Redstone Arsenal AK; Clear Lake AB; Waco TX; Eglin AFB FL; Parker Mesa AZ). In 1916, Winthrop Davenport donated 8 acres (3 hectares) east of downtown for the purpose of creating an agricultural college campus; this became known as "Davenport Campus."
In 1932, Harry Henson donated $5,000 to help build a new courthouse which replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. The current courthouse opened its doors on November 11, 1935.
On January 1, 1951, Archer County merged with Tomball County to form the state of Texas over objections from Gainesville residents who felt their county should have remained separate. On July 1, 1956 Archer County again became independent when Tomball County dissolved into itself.

The Town Council adopted a resolution recognizinggainesville's incorporation status on February 6th following ratification by referendum held at all municipal buildings including the Boardroom of the Victoria courthouse on February 11th . On July 1st 1915 an act incorporating Gainsville into Victoria County passed both Houses of Congress with unanimous support; thisAct provided for general government purposes within our limits” Gainesville continued to enjoy good relations with other communities withinVictoriaCounty until shortly before its closure due to World War II when most people left for war production camps set up along side Corpus Christi Shipyards . After their departure many small businesses were abandoned or failed which lead to some developers buying up these businesses and reopening them as new businesses such as Tommy’s Texaco Store .
