The town's first post office was established in 1894 and was known as 'The Gables'. In 1916, the military installation at Fort Worth was transferred to Gainesville and the name of the fort changed to Fort Worth Army Air Base. In 1951, Gainesville became an independent city and its municipal services were outsourced to Dallas. However, local businesses continued to give back to Gainesville through donations of uniforms and equipment. On November 8, 1957, during Hurricane Ike, Fort Worth Army Air Base closed its doors for good and all military activity in Gainesville ended. Today there are only a few remnants of the once large military presence in Gainesville- most notably Hillcrest Cemetery which serves as the gravesite for more than 60 World War II veterans who died while serving in Japan or Korea. However, even though Fort WorthArmy Air Base has long since disappeared from our town's memory it is not forgotten- each year on Veterans Day we remember those who gave their lives for our country with picnics at Hillcrest Cemetery followed by a parade down Main Street honoring their fallen comrades.

Gainesville is the second largest town in Comanche County and it is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on Interstate 35 and State Highway 114. The first post office was established in Gainesville on October 24, 1875. The name "Gainesville" originated from an Indian word meaning "a place where one could gather water." In 1904, Gainesville became a city after it was annexed by Wichita Falls. In 1907, Wichita Falls annexed Gainesville and the two cities formed a single municipality under the name of Wichita Falls/Gainesville City. In 1912, Wichita Falls annexed more villages within its boundaries: Pecos, Atoka and Box Elder which made up what are now Haskell County and San Angelo County respectively. On December 15th of that year, Wichita Falls annexed Gainesville again making it an official city with 624 residents ( although this number may have been reduced due to fire damage). In 1945, when Comanche County was reorganized into 36 districts (the first such designation), gainesville fell within District 16 which included all of Comancheseed Township east of I-35 as well as most of Haskell County including downtown Wichita Falls and much of Box Elder county including today's Danville township outside of Wichita Falls' limits

Gainesville is a town in Coke County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town began as a post office called Gainesville on November 12, 1875, under the name of an earlier settlement within the present-day municipality of Round Rock. On October 29, 1907, Gainesville became a city with a population of 712. Following the Mexican–American War and following the admission of Texas as a southern state in February 1867, General Sam Houston ordered his forces to march from San Antonio to Canadian River and attack Santa Anna's army from that location. A detachment led by Captain John Neely Johnston reached Gainesville on January 1st and attacked the Mexican soldiers encampment there about 1:00 pm; but although some shots were fired and some casualties sustained, no blood was spilt and no capture was made. This event is generally regarded as marking Confederate victory at this point in their war against Mexico. On January 10th General Houston sent word through Major James Hogg that he had arrived at Canadian River with 14 cannons (the first military engagement between Texans and Mexicans). The battle took place very near where Johnston's detachment had attacked; it lasted around three hours before Santa Anna's force drove off without loss to either side. Lt Colonel William Murchison’s battalion of Rangers also fought in this skirmish which resulted in one dead Ranger and several wounded men for Gaffney’s brigade (1st Texan Infantry Regiment) commandant John Sutter who led his regiment into action during this engagement becoming highly decorated for his actions during this period having been twice mentioned in dispatches as being “gallant & successful”; both times for leading his men successfully into battle despite severe wounds received while participating in operations against enemy troops under Mexican general Joaquín de Sepúlveda y Ochoa near El Paso on July 8th & 9th 1871 respectively...It should be noted that although losing many members due to engagements such as these alongTexan frontierduring1867&68 Campaigns – including two captains killed[], Gaffney’s brigade did not disband until after Harper’s Ferry occurred on April 6th 1870 – mustering over 2 1000 man infantry regiment effective September 30th 1870 - Lieutenant Colonel Wm Murchison commanding 5 Companies remained active duty until relieved by Company E [2nd Texas Infantry Regiment] which moved into Fort Worth early 1865]. Aftermath of battles: According to Captain Johnston’s journal entry from January 1st1865: “We lost about 20 men only but they all got up again quick enough […] Our Captains here Captains Beattie[sic] Anson[sic] Hitchcock[?], Pogue[?] Thomason killing one or two Mexicans we captured also We captured six saddled horses [...] We gainville today we have abundance water so our cattle can drink plentifully I am much pleased with us So far I have seen nothing but well born Texas people so I shall continue good will towards them my boys
Gainesville was founded in 1848 by John T. Gaines and his family. The town quickly became a center of trade and commerce, providing goods and services to the surrounding area. In 1865, Gainesville hosted the first United States Congress in what is now Austin, Texas. In 1881, the city annexed the neighboring town of Temple. In 1907, Gainesville incorporated as a city under the name of Houston Heights. In 1925, Houston Heights was renamed Dallas after then-Mayor James K. Dallas made an honorary donation to make it a "city of distinction". In 1961 Arlington County annexed Gainesville as its newest municipality; however, this annexation did not result in any change to the city's official name or municipal boundaries.
