Johnston, the first U.S. Minister to Cuba. The Texas Army National Guard's 4th Battalion, 5th Regiment is one of the oldest units in the United States Army and dates back to 1861 when it was organized at Fort Worth under the command of Brigadier General James Hogg. The battalion served during the American Civil War as part of the 1st Texan Brigade under Major General John J. Pershing and fought at battles such as Chickamauga and Gettysburg before being mustered out in 1865. The unit re-joined the army in 1898 and served during World War I as part of VIII Corps under Lieutenant Colonel James Millingen until its demobilization in 1919. It again rejoined the army for World War II as a component of XII Corps until its demobilization on September 2, 1945. In 1951, Gainesville became an air force station when Air Defense Command activated it from Randolph AFB north of Dallas with duty over airspace around Dallas/Fort Worth area including Johnson City, Johnson County (including Gainesville), Throckmorton County (including Elmwood Springs), Parker County (including Arlington), Starr County (including Spring Branch) and Williamson County (including Temple). Gainesville is a town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is part of the Fort Worth metropolitan area. Gainesville was first settled by Texans in 1836. It most likely received its name from General James G. Gaines who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Texas (1845–1849). In 1861, Confederate forces burned down the courthouse and several other buildings in Gainesville due to frustration over lack of response from Union forces besieged within the town limits. On February 12, 1865, Confederate Major General J.B. Hood's 10th Texas Infantry Regiment marched into Gainesville and burned everything they found there including all but one building in town before retreating back out again due to heavy losses sustained during that day's fighting – losing almost every soldier on hand save for three officers: Captain Wm Husted and two lieutenants John Sweeny and Elisha Smith - who were captured by Union troops while leading their unit across the border into Mexico City that night. Gainesville, Texas was founded in 1836 by John C. Gaines on the banks of the Colorado River. It became a seat of government for Denton County, Texas in 1853 and was named for General James K. Polk, who was then United States Secretary of War. In 1912, Gainesville became the capital of Denton County and has since been the most populous city in that county. The population of Gainesville reached 153,362 in 2010 and is projected to exceed 200,000 by 2030. The first settlers in what is now Gainesville were Native American Indians known as the Wichita people. They arrived between 1795 and 1800 from Kansas City, Missouri. A grants system organized by President George Washington gave land to individuals or families who would settle it permanently. James K. Polk decided to establish a military post at Fort Worth near present-day Dallas to protect against Mexican attacks on Texas during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). He selected Gainesville as the site for his new post because it had an easily defended river crossing point on the Colorado River and good food supplies available nearby from hunting and fishing expeditions undertaken by his armymen during their campaigns in Mexico. Polk assigned Colonel James Hogg to lead a party of soldiers who founded a small town called Hoggsboro on November 15, 1836 about three miles east of present-day Gainesville off State Highway 259 near what is now Interstate 10 Eastbound Exit 8B (Exit 375A if you're traveling from I-10 West). The town was originally intended only as an interim station until Fort Worth could be built; however, it grew quickly into a fullfledged settlement with several stores, homes, churches and schools establish before January 1st 1840 when Fort Worth was finally completed!
