Gainesville is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,629 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1883 by white settlers and became an agricultural center after the opening of the Wichita and Rio Grande Railroad in 1905. The first businesses in Gainesville were a grocery store, bakery, post office and hotel. By 1915, there were also two cotton gin plants and three sawmills. In 1925, Gainesville had its own school system with thirty-five students and one teacher. In 1930 it annexed to nearby Round Rock. In 1940, gainesville had its first television station which was licensed to Waco; however due to World War II the station was destroyed before it could be built. In 1951, Waco switched to CBS while Gainesville continued as an ABC affiliate until 1957 when it changed to KXAN-TV (channel 33). Gainesville, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and has a population of about 25,000 residents. The city was founded in 1879 by General James Hogg, who named it for himself and his brother-in-law George Gaines. The first store in Gainesville was opened in 1881 by J.W. Harper and Wm. Pritchett Jr.. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 507 people. It had a schoolhouse from 1903 to 1945 but no other buildings until 1951 when the first municipal building was built on Landis Avenue near today's University Drive.
